Today 06/02/2012 , the Queen celebrates 60 years on the throne. She is the second British monarch to reach that milestone.
During her reign, the royal family has faced tumultuous times and moments of plummeting popularity.
Elizabeth II, 85, became queen aged 25 on February 6, 1952 on the death of her father George VI, while on tour in Kenya with her husband Prince Philip.
At one time, the monarchy was very unpopular especially after the death of Diana. However, since the marriage of Will and Kate, the monarchy has been regaining its popularity.
Some people don’t like them because they cost the British taxpayer millions of pounds on things like official overseas trips and palace maintenance. Some people like them because they represent history and heritage and they bring in a lot of tourists every year.
