When Elizabeth Hatfield lost her passport somewhere along the road in Northern Africa way back in 1950 she didn't hold up much hope of finding it. But never could she have guessed that it would turn up more than 60 years later at a flea market just around the corner from her home.
After graduating from Berkeley in 1949, Elizabeth and a friend went to Europe where they were supposed to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. Her name was Betty Werther, there was a telephone number and incredibly she was now living in Paris. Nuno added: 'I was very nervous. 'I didn't know, if I did find this person, how she would react, if she would be interested or not at all.' Betty explained: 'I thought it was like a crank call.
'I am used to having people phone me for money or to belong to something or to sign a petition, and so I almost hung up.' So Nuno set off to Paris after and after sixty years the lost passport was finally returned to its owner.
Betty added: 'There was such a build up to this. I was kind of palpitating. 'To meet this person who had gone through so much trouble, that was more important than the passport. It's the whole experience which is extraordinary.' Betty opened a bottle of Champagne to celebrate in style and she and Nuno flipped through the old passport. Each stamp bringing back a few stories. Nuno said: 'It was fantastic.
Betty is a very welcoming person, and she has lived a remarkable life, and she has many stories to tell.'

Amazing story.
