The 65 passengers, according to the member representing Agatu Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Mr. Sule Audu, were travelling in an old engine boat, fleeing Agatu which was already submerged by flood.
The people, he said, were travelling to Lokoja to stay with their relatives after they were sacked from their houses by the flood. He added that the accident happened between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., between Obangana and Lokoja on the river.
Corpses of the drowned passengers were yet to be recovered as of press time. In another development, prostitutes in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, have relocated from their various hotels to Felelele and Nataco areas in the town, where hundreds of passengers and vehicles got stranded as a result of flood.
According to one of them, they normally came to the spot any time from 8.00 p.m. She also said they charged based on agreement with their customers, adding that she made an average of N20,000 between the time and 11.30 p.m. daily.
When asked how she got home after the day’s business, she disclosed that she had a standby okada man that took her back at a sum of N1,000 naira every day.
