Olympic Torch -Police chief: “we had a deal with Olympic torch protesters, but they broke it”

While others are enjoying the Olympic torch some were in trouble with the police

On the 7th of Jun the Olympic flame on its journey through Londonderry city centre protesters dissident republicans broke an agreement to be peaceful. The police chief said:  “The closer the Olympic Torch came the more aggressive the protesters got and the mood changed where my officers were being verbally abused and there was pushing and shoving.  We had this incident it was public safety, and first and foremost the protection of life.

Torch bearer Isobel Coote (58) from Ballygawley managed to keep hold of the flame throughout the scuffles and carried it across the Peace Bridge intact. She was unfazed by the protest.
According to her “It was totally amazing. It was just a once in a lifetime experience, never to be forgotten.”
