Father chains son and leaves him to die in the forest

As horrible as this sounds,it happened, this  little boy was found yesterday morning (29th Sept 2012) inside a bush near a river in Okpuno Awka by the community security service during the sanitation exercise. His legs were bound in chains and locked with a padlock.

From investigations, his father known as Alhaji by his fellow Okada riders and hails from the Igala community of Kogi state is the one who chained his two legs and left him in the bush for three days without food or water. It was gathered that this same man told his neighbours that his son had been missing for the past three days.

His neighbours oblivious of the fact that he knew the whereabouts of his son also joined him in the search. However, luck ran out on him today when the security men from the community discovered the boy crying in the bush. The little boy happens to be the only child from his former wife who is no longer living with him.

President Goodluck Jonathan's 52nd Independence Day Speech

Nigerian President marks independence para inside fortified presidential villa 2nd year running. Fear over terrorist attack.

Here is the speech
Since I assumed office as President of our dear country on the 6th of May 2010, I have continued to work with our countrymen and women to enhance our nation’s growth and development.

Our vision is encapsulated in the Transformation Agenda. We are working hard and making progress on many fronts. We have cleaned up our electoral process; our elections are now globally acclaimed to be free and fair. Nigeria is now on a higher pedestal regarding elections.

Over the past five years, the global economy has been going through a weak and uncertain recovery. During the same period and particularly in the last two years, the Nigerian economy has done appreciably well despite the global financial crisis. Nigeria’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has grown by 7.1 per cent on average.

It is also significant that the GDP growth has been driven largely by the non-oil sector. In pursuance of the main goals of the Transformation Agenda, a number of reforms and initiatives are being pursued in key sectors of the economy with a view to consolidating the gains of the economic growth.

Our country’s power supply situation is improving gradually. We are successfully implementing a well-integrated power sector reform programme which includes institutional arrangements to facilitate and strengthen private-sector-led power generation, transmission and distribution.

We have also put in place a cost-reflective tariff structure that reduces the cost of power for a majority of electricity consumers. I am pleased with the feedback from across the country, of improvements in power supply.

We are continuing to improve and stabilize on our crude production volumes; our 12-month gas supply emergency plan, put in place earlier this year, has produced more than the targeted volumes of gas for power generation.

A robust Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) has been placed before the National Assembly. Its passage into law will ensure far-reaching reforms, transparency, accountability, increased government revenue and predictability for investors in the Oil and Gas sector.

Several government programmes and projects are creating wealth and millions of job opportunities for our youth and general population. Such programmes include: You-Win, both for the youth and for the women, Public Works, the Local Content Initiative in the Oil and Gas Sector, and the Agricultural Transformation programme. We have improved on our investment environment; more corporate bodies are investing in the Nigerian economy.

Our Investment Climate Reform Programme has helped to attract over N6.8 trillion local and foreign direct investment commitments. Nigeria has become the preferred destination for investment in Africa. It is ranked first in the top 5 host economies for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Africa, accounting for over 20 per cent of total FDI flows into the continent.

We have streamlined bureaucratic activities at the ports to ensure greater efficiency in the handling of ports and port-related businesses. Specifically, we have drastically reduced the goods clearing period in our ports from about six weeks to about one week and under. We have an ultimate target of 48 hours. We have put in place, a new visa policy that makes it easier for legitimate investors to receive long stay visas. We have achieved a 24-hour timeline for registration of new businesses, leading to the registration of close to 7, 000 companies within the second quarter of 2012.

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has disclosed that, as at July 2012, 249 new members across the country had joined the Association, and that capacity utilization has also improved. The multiplier effect of this development on our job creation programme cannot be over-emphasized.

In the last two years, we have put in place structures for an upgrade of the country’s health sector, to promote in every respect, the individual citizen’s right to quality, affordable and accessible healthcare. In this regard, we are devoting resources under the Subsidy Reinvestment Program (SURE-P) to reducing malaria incidents, dramatically reducing maternal and child mortality, and eradicating polio.

Fellow Nigerians, in recent times, we have witnessed serious security challenges in parts of our country. We have taken pro-active measures to check the menace. This has included constant consultation and collaboration with our neighbours and other friendly nations on issues relating to internal and cross border security, and the sharing of information on smuggling and illegal dealing in small arms and light weapons.

Our security agencies are constantly being strengthened and repositioned for greater efficiency. Many Nigerians have acknowledged that there has been a significant decline in the spate of security breaches. While expressing our condolences to the affected families, let me reiterate the commitment of this Administration to ensure the safety of lives and property of all Nigerians.

Even as we remain focused on the issue of security, the fight against the scourge of corruption is a top priority of our Administration. We are fighting corruption in all facets of our economy, and we are succeeding. We have put an end to several decades of endemic corruption associated with fertilizer and tractor procurement and distribution.

We have exposed decades of scam in the management of pensions and fuel subsidy, and ensured that the culprits are being brought to book. In its latest report, Transparency International (TI) noted that Nigeria is the second most improved country in the effort to curb corruption. We will sustain the effort in this direction with an even stronger determination to strengthen the institutions that are statutorily entrusted with the task of ending this scourge.

I have given my commitment of non-interference in the work of the relevant agencies and I am keeping my word. What we require is the full cooperation of all tiers of government, and the public, especially civil society and the media. This Administration has also introduced for the first time in Nigeria’s history, a Performance Contract System for all Ministers, and other officials of government. This is to further place emphasis on performance, efficiency, and service delivery.

Fellow Nigerians, our determined efforts on several fronts not-withstanding, our country still faces a number of challenges. Those challenges should not deter us. In the last few weeks, for example, many of our communities have been ravaged by floods, resulting in the loss of lives and property, and the displacement of persons. I want to reassure all affected Nigerians that I share in their grief, and our Administration is taking steps to address these incidents, in collaboration with the States and Local Governments. I have received the interim Report of the Presidential team that I set up to assess the flooding situation across the country.

The Federal Government has taken measures to assist the affected States, while considering long term measures to check future reoccurrence. We must continue to work together, confidently and faithfully, to ensure that our country’s potentials are realised to the fullest; that our dreams are translated into reality; and that our goals are achieved. Let me reiterate that our administration is committed to the pursuit of fundamental objectives of an open society: the pursuit of freedom, security and prosperity for the Nigerian people, and the rule of law. In the next few days, I shall lay before the National Assembly the 2013 Federal Budget Proposal so that deliberations can commence in earnest on the key policies, programmes and projects that will mark a decisive year for our development and transformation.

I have no doubt that by the time I address you on our next independence anniversary, many of our reform efforts would have yielded even better results. Over the years, several leaders have built on the foundation laid by our Founding Fathers.

The baton is now in our hands. Let me assure all Nigerians that we shall not fail. I am confident that Nigeria will continue to be a source of pride to its citizens; to Africa and the Black Race and to humanity; a land that is known for progress, freedom, peace and the promotion of human dignity.

May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. May God bless you all.

NIGERIA TURNS 52, HIP!HIP! HURRY!

Things will change for the best, use your gift, skills and influence to make a difference in my country, your country,Nigeria.

1 Child Killed, 3 Wounded in Kenya Church Attack

Kenyan authorities say a hand grenade has ripped through a church in the capital, Nairobi, killing a child of nine year old and wounding three others.

Police say the attack appeared to target a Sunday school class for children. There has been no claim of responsibility for Sunday’s attack on the St. Polycarp church on the outskirts of Nairobi.

However, authorities suspect the Somali militant group al-Shabab. Kenya has seen a series of similar deadly attacks on churches since the country sent troops into neighboring Somalia last year along with African Union forces to fight al-Shabab.

The group, linked to al-Qaida, abandoned its last stronghold in Somalia on Saturday, vowing to retaliate against Kenyan and AU forces.

Why Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's underwear bomb failed to detonate

We all know Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who tried to explode a Northwest Flight 253 over Detroit in the United States of America wore underwear for three weeks to be exact, and it may have been the reason why he was unsuccessful in his 2009 terrorist plans aboard a Detroit-bound airliner.

The new details were revealed by two FBI agents who played a role in securing a confession from Abdulmutallab, shortly after the bungled plot.

During his trial he said the bomb in his underwear was a ‘blessed weapon’ to avenge poorly treated Muslims around the world. Two FBI agents told WXYZ TV that Umar confessed to the plot, saying that he had worn the explosive underwear for three weeks in order to get used to it and make sure he could get it through security.

“So basically for three weeks he wore this garment, these underwear with this device in it. We think ultimately that is probably what caused the disruption in the sequence of events in the explosion,” said FBI agent Ted Peissig. The agents also revealed that Umar was not recruited by al Qaeda, but the other way around.

“He sought out al Qaeda relentlessly,” another FBI agent on the case, Mike Connelly said. “He persisted and he was almost turned away at times, you know, by al Qaeda. But he refused to relent.” FBI agents also say the Underwear Bomber might have inadvertently foiled his own plot because of his obsession about making sure the bomb would not be detected.

They further revealed that he had been instructed to detonate the bomb over a populated area to maximize the death toll. Here is the account of the FBI agents as reported by WXYZ TV In Abdulmutallab’s mind it was an act of martyrdom and jihad. He had no feelings for the men, women and children around him who were about die, according to the FBI agents. “He did not bat an eye in saying if that plane was going to go down, it was going to go down. That was God’s call.

That wasn’t his call. His responsibility was just to detonate the bomb, and whatever happened, happened,” says agent Connelly. As the huge jumbo jet carrying over 300 people was approaching Detroit, Abulmutallab disappeared into the restroom to wash himself, a ritual for his passage into the next life. When he returned to his seat he told the guy sitting next to him that he wasn’t feeling well.

“And pulled a blanket almost completely concealing himself up to the chin,” says Agent Peissig. Using a plastic syringe, Abdulmutallab injected a mixture of liquids and solids into the explosive chemicals already packed into his underwear. But Instead of exploding, the bomb burst into flames, setting his clothes and the blanket on fire, seriously burning him.

The two agents who visited Nigeria during the course of his investigation said they extracted detailed and chilling information about Abdulmutallab and his mission, getting a rare glimpse into the mind of a suicide bomber. “In his tone, his conversation, he’s very reserved,” adds agent Connelly.

“He’s deliberate in his speech.” “The witnesses remarked about how he just looked like a simple young school boy,” says Peissig. But appearances don’t match reality in the case of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Agents say he was an extreme fanatic and a very dangerous man.

He was hell-bent on taking down a jumbo jet over Detroit with no consideration for the hundreds who would die in the plane and on the ground.

“He is completely different from any terrorist that I’ve had the ability to talk to,” explains Connelly. “Different because of his absolute devotion to Jihad. The degree of conviction that he had  is unparalleled.” Daily Mail

Sahara reporters- EFCC Arrests 24 Year-Old Currency Courier Trying to Smuggle N1.1billion Cash out of Nigeria

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a 24 year-old Nigerian, Abubakar Tijani Sheriff for attempting to travel with the sum of $7 million (N1, 120,000billion).

He was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International airport, Lagos as he was trying to travel to Dubai aboard a United Arab Emirates flight on Thursday.
After his arrest, he said that he had a total sum of $4.5million. But when he was thoroughly searched, he was found to have $7,049,444 on him.

He later confessed that he was a courier for 20 individuals who hired him to take the money for them to Dubai. Authorities said that the money was proceeds from illegal deals and he is a suspected money laundering courier. He has already mentioned 20 prominent Nigerians who are the owners of the money.

The EFCC in a statement released by its spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren to Sahara Reporters yesterday said that “Investigations by the EFCC showed that Sheriff is a regular traveller and one of several couriers of illegal cash suspected to be proceeds of crime.”
“Travellers leaving the country are statutorily required to declare cash in excess of $10,000. However, under the provisions of the Money Laundering Act, it is not sufficient to declare excess cash; the onus is on the person making the declaration to explain the source of the excess cash and the reason for the export.”

He is now being detained at the EFCC’s holding facility in Lagos pending his arraignment in court.

A couple -Nigerian scammers- tried to claim £3.8m using 1,400 different identities

Abimbola Abiola,34 the photo of the lady above and the man Adeola Thomas, 38 below
This couple jailed for a total of almost 10 years for trying to claim £3.8million in an ‘eye-watering’ benefits scam using 1,400 stolen identities.

Adeola Thomas,38, assisted by his partner, Abimbola Abiola,34, managed to pocket £87,000 after submitting almost 2,500 handwritten applications for tax credits and benefits.

The pair spent the money on designer clothing and electrical items including a 50-inch plasma television.
But the fraud was discovered when benefits staff noticed the same address was being used for multiple claims, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

Thomas, an illegal immigrant, was jailed for seven years while Abiola, also a Nigerian national with leave to remain in the UK, received two-and-a-half years.

Passing sentence, Judge William Kennedy said: ‘This was no less than a criminal industry, with simple and eye watering criminality designed to maximise the loss to the public.

‘It was a difficult investigation carried out with skill and tenacity. ‘The largest single joint conspiracy [of its kind] for these departments and the actual loss was kept down because of the work of both departments.’

Judge Kennedy also indicated that both Thomas and Abiola should be deported at the end of their prison terms. The pair, who carried out the scam between January 3, 2007 and October 7, 2011, tried to claim £827,000 from HMRC, securing £43,000.

They also claimed £3 million from the Department of Work and Pensions and received £44,000. With Abiola’s help, Thomas used stolen personal details to complete 2,495 handwritten application forms, which were sent to the appropriate departments for processing.

When the claims were successful, the pair withdrew cash from acquaintances' bank accounts or from bogus post office accounts that Thomas, pictured, had set up It is believed that others unknown to investigators, also provided postal addresses and assisted with correspondence. When the claims were successful, the pair withdrew cash from acquaintances' bank accounts or from bogus post office accounts that Thomas, who masterminded the scam, had set up.

As well as analysing tax credit records, computer systems, hand written application forms and bank account details and listening to hours of recorded phones calls to the Tax Credit Helpline, HMRC investigators viewed CCTV footage showing activity outside various North London Post Office ATMs and carried out surveillance on Thomas.

He was arrested outside a cash point at Upper Clacton Post Office in Hackney, east London last October 7 where he was found to be in possession of 17 Post Office accounts. He also had two mobile phones and two fraudulently completed application forms addressed to Job Centre Plus. Abiola, a mother-of-one, was caught on the same day with £4,125 cash in her handbag, which she claimed was child benefit payment.

Thomas, of Hackney, east London, admitted three counts of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering. Abiola, of the same address was found guilty of four counts of conspiracy to defraud, money laundering and possession of criminal property following a trial at the court in August.
