Fake US Embassy worker

A 37-year-old man by the name Chinedu Ezeona , had allegedly defrauded his victims of N5million.
He claimed to be a senior system analyst at the visa section of the American Embassy.

The suspect was arrested by detectives attached to the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The SFU chief, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, a Commissioner of Police, said the suspect who operated from his base in Enugu, also drove around town with American Embassy diplomatic number plate.

Ogunsakin said the suspect connived with Obiora Agu of OBITEX Cosmetic Ventures and Sam Ufomadu to defraud a victim of N4.9m to help him secure admission into an American university and procure visa.

Ogunsakin said Ezeona had successfully hacked into two foreign telephone numbers, +1940/31528 and +19406049866 which he claimed belong to Atlanta University.

“He is said to have used the telephone numbers to contact his victims to make his claims real. His greed landed him in police net as he requested for another $4,100 from his victims.

The victim became suspicious and reported to the police,” Ogunsakin said.

More on Banker Yinka Johnson who was allegedly accused of killing a lastma official

“I was driving on Lekki-Epe Expressway trying to navigate to the other side of the road when I was accosted by a LASTMA official. The path I took was a one-way road but residents of Ikota Estate usually take it because of the ongoing road reconstruction on the alternative road. While I was discussing with the LASTMA official, a vehicle crushed another official a few metres away, causing commotion. I did not run from the crime scene as it was not far from my home but instead came down from my car and called my husband.

After the LASTMA officials drove my car away, I went to the police station with my husband to report the incident. When I got to the police station, the area commander immediately took over the case and took me to the office of the commissioner of police. I heard the state governor had already told him about the case”.
A recap of the case Here

Lightning strikes mosque leaving 13 dead

Before now, May last year, at least 29 people were killed — most of them farmers who were harvesting rice — and dozens injured when a series of lightning strikes hit several districts in a single day.
13 Muslim worshippers were killed and 15 hurt when lightning struck a mosque in a remote village in northeast Bangladesh as they held special Ramadan prayers, police said on Saturday.
The imam was among those instantly killed when a lightning bolt hit the tin-and-thatch building at Saraswatipur village, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the capital Dhaka, late on Friday. The lightning appeared to "electrify" the mosque after hitting a rooftop microphone being run on power from a car battery, local council member Abul Kalam told AFP by telephone

About 35 people from the village in the lake district of Sunamganj were holding prayers known as taraweeh — offered during the holy fasting month of Ramadan — at the time, police chief Bayes Alam said."All 13, including the imam, died on the spot.

The bodies and faces of some of the victims were burnt," Alam told AFP, adding six of the injured were hospitalised.Locals had turned the flimsy structure into a mosque because access to the village's more substantial concrete-roofed mosque had been made difficult due to recent heavy rains that have swollen the Saraswati river.Villagers rushed to help after hearing cries, Kalam said."It was a terrible scene.

Dozens were lying on the floor — some dead, others writhing in pain," he said, adding most of the victims were young men in their 20s and 3Os."We took the injured in three boats and headed to hospital in Dharmapasa", the closest big town, he said. "But it took hours to get there," he added.Lightning is a major threat in Sunamganj, home to some of Bangladesh's biggest lakes. Most lightning strikes occur during the monsoon season between June and September when the district receives huge amounts of rainfall.

Across the South Asian country, hundreds of people are killed by lightning strikes every year, with most dying while attempting to save rice crops from flooding. Bangladeshi environmentalists blame global warming, which has unleashed a growing number of tropical storms, for the increase in the frequency, devastation and deaths caused by lightning strikes in recent years.

It was not a hit and run -Eyewitnesses denies LASTMA ‘s accusation

Hammed Balogun, LASTMA official, who was allegedly run over by a female banker, Yinka Johnson, might actually have been hit by a reckless Danfo bus and not the banker as originally portrayed.
The banker, a mother of three including a 2month old baby who is with her in detention, according to the traffic authority, she was said to have been driving against traffic along Lekki-Ajah expressway when she was accosted by the now-deceased 33-year-old LASTMA official.

'Please if you are the eyewitness or you know anyone who knows the eyewitness to come forward and give statements at Panti......if not for anything, for the sake of the two month old baby in detention with her) Better put......let the truth be told.'

According to the General Manager of the traffic management authority, Mr. Babatunde Edu, “The driver, whose identity was revealed by the auto inspector device as Yinka Johnson, an employee of IBTC, drove in a green LandRover Jeep with registration number CY 276 LSD against traffic from Mega Chicken inward toll plaza two.

“She was intercepted by three officials of LASTMA led by the head of Operations, Mr. Quayum Asafa, for traffic violation. Johnson started driving recklessly in order to escape and in the process ran over the officer. “The deceased was rushed to Germaine Hospital where he later died as a result of injury sustained from the accident.

The corpse was deposited at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, Ikeja for autopsy. “Realising what she had done, she ran and escaped from the scene of the incident into Ikota Estate, Ajah with the security men shutting the gate.

“The situation became riotous as the security attached to the gate refused all entreaties to open the gate until the intervention of the area commander in charge of Area J, Mr. Felix Uwamli, who called for backup before access could be gained into the estate.”

Eye-witnesses at the scene of the incident however say that the official was hit by a Danfo driver and not the banker whose car was stationary when the incident happened.

Doyin Akinlade, a Lagos TV producer, who claimed to be privy to the circumstances leading to her arrest, said that “the LASTMA authorities, for some unexplained reasons are trying to pin the alleged crime on Yinka Johnson whose car was not even moving at the time Hammed Balogun was hit. She did not even see the man being hit.”

He agreed that the banker violated the law by driving against traffic but he insisted that it was not true that she hit the official. He also noted that there was no sign of impact on her car but the said Danfo had its windscreen broken.

Nigerian student charged for bank fraud in Malaysia

A Nigerian student, Francis Luther Osayanem, 33, has been charged with two offences, including trying to defraud a bank officer of $9,000 using a fake passport and for possession of a fake passport.
Francis was denied bail by a magistrate’s court in Malaysia after his proposed sureties failed to even identify him by name. A local media site thestaronlinesite, reported.
Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), S. Malini Anne urged the court to set the bail at RM40, 000 for the first offence and RM5, 000 for the second with two local sureties, considering the monetary amount involved.

She also asked that Francis surrender his passport to the court, should bail be given. Magistrate Erry Shahriman Nor Aripin requested the bailers to give details about their so called “friend”, but they failed to even name him despite his name being read aloud along with the charge.

The magistrate denied Francis bail, saying the bailers did not qualify as suitable sureties. Both alleged offences occurred at the RHB Bank in Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), on Jalan Ampang at 10.05am on July 26. The first charge is punishable under section 420 of the Penal Code with up to 10 years prison, whipping and a fine.

Lagos banks to begin use of e-cheques today – CBN

Beginning today (Friday), customers will be able to begin using electronic cheques at specified banks across Lagos, as the Lagos Clearing House is to serve as the pilot zone for the cheque truncation policy, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has said.
The policy, which involves the conversion of physical cheque into electronic form for transmission to the paying bank and thus eliminating physical presentation of the cheque, thereby saving time and processing cost.
This will begin on Friday with only Deposit Money Banks in Lagos participating in the scheme, which was originally scheduled  to take effect on August 1.
