Community counts losses after students’ rampage -punch

THE people of Omuokiri Aluu Community have begun to count their losses barely 24 hours after students from the University of Port Harcourt embarked on reprisals to avenge the killings of their colleagues.
The angry students had on Tuesday stormed the community, burnt some houses, cars and other property over the torture and murder of the students on Friday.

Four undergraduates of UNIPORT were lynched by a mob comprising members of the community for allegedly stealing laptop computer and a BlackBerry phone.

The students were Biringa Chiadika of the Theatre Arts Department; Ugonna Obuzor of Geology Department, Mike Toku Llyod of Civil Engineering Department and Tekena Elkena. When our correspondent visited the community on Wednesday, few of the indigenes were seen bemoaning their losses.

One of the leaders of the community, Sunday Ahanonu, said he had lost all he laboured for to the students’ reprisals. Ahanonu, whose house was torched by the students, expressed shock that security agents could not stop the rampaging students when they stormed the community. Sixty-five-year-old Ahanonu and father of 15 children, worked at UNIPORT for 35 years before he retired. He appealed to the state government and the management of the university to compensate him for the destruction of his property, adding that he and members of his family were not involved in the killings of the students. Ahanonu said, “I am a retired civil servant.

I worked with UNIPORT for 35. But all I have achieved for many years have been destroyed by students from the university. I don’t know where my family and I will lay our heads when my only house has been burnt. “I lost the sum of N850,000 cash, which I kept in my house. I could not take the money to the bank because I was not feeling okay and went to the hospital. It was at the hospital that I learnt that my house was burnt by the students.” Also, a woman, who identified herself as Pauline Nwakwo, told our correspondent that she left the village when she learnt that security agents had embarked on mass arrest, but came back to notice that her bar had been burgled. According to her, the rampaging students forcibly entered her bar and carried away her deep freezer and drinks.

She said, “As a woman, I had to run away when we noticed that the police were embarking on mass arrest. The students broke the door to my bar and took away a deep freezer I bought for N66,000. I want government to pay me back all I have lost. “The students were killed far from here at the Burrow pit.

We don’t know anything about the killings of the students.” Indigenes of the community were also seen leaving their homes in droves to other places in order to avoid being attacked by the students. One of them, who gave her name as Comfort, said she was relocating her children to Elele in Rivers State and would only return to Omuokiri Aluu whenever normalcy returns.

An artisan, Mr. Wisdom Ajuwon, who repairs home appliances along the Omuokiri Aluu Road, said he lost property worth about N500,000 to the riotous students. Showing a list of what he lost to the fire ignited by students, Ajuwon also appealed to the state government to come to his aid.

A cleric in the area, Pastor John Paul, described the situation in the community as terrible, adding that people were running out of their homes like refugees.

Nigerian woman dies after buttocks enlargement surgery

Claudia Aderotimi
                                                            Black Madam

A woman who called herself the 'Black Madam' will stand trial on murder charges for allegedly performing illegal buttocks-enhancing procedures on a Nigerian-born woman,Claudia Aderotimi who later died in her Philadelphia hotel.

A judge upheld third-degree murder charges during a preliminary hearing today against Padge Gordon, who is also known as Padge Windslowe, 40.

The ruling comes after a friend of the dancer testified today that she and 20-year-old Claudia Aderotimi came to Philadelphia last year and had their buttocks enlarged. Windslowe's defense attorney argued that both girls knew his client was not a real doctor as they had visited her for the injections before.

Theresa Gyamfi said the 'Black Madam' gave them silicone injections in their hotel room — but then fled when Aderotimi went into respiratory distress. A doctor testified that the industrial-grade, not medical grade, silicone went to Aderotimi's blood, liver, lungs and brain. She was rushed to a Delaware County hospital in an ambulance, but died within hours of a pulmonary embolism, according to the doctor.

But defense lawyer Christopher Mannix said he will challenge those medical conclusions at trial, along with allegations his client performed the injections. The Philadelphia Inquirer said that prosecutors told the court she painted herself out to be a medical professional when she administered a series of injections to the two women. This was the second time the woman went to Windslowe, paying $1,800 to $2,300 a time to have their butts enlarged.

Claudia Aderotimi believed a 'bigger booty' would help her to appear in more music videos, according to her distraught friends

Chinua Achebe hates Awo and the Yoruba race'

A leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has faulted extracts from Prof. Chinua Achebe’s latest memoirs on the Nigerian Civil War accusing the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as the initiator of the pogrom against the Igbo.

The memoirs coming 42 years after the war, Adebanjo said, reinforced “Achebe’s pathological hatred for Awolowo and the Yoruba race.”
According to him, the renowned novelist need to be cured of his Awophobia.

Reacting to Achebe’s memoirs entitled “There was a country,” the Afenifere leader in a statement on Tuesday said it was Awolowo who rather tried to prevent the war. He said, “At the risk of his life, and against the advice of his cabinet colleagues, Chief Awolowo made contact with Ojukwu and met him in Enugu to dissuade him from going to war.

In his one-on-one meeting with Ojukwu, Chief Awolowo tried to persuade Ojukwu to come to a roundtable conference with the Federal Government to iron out his differences with the government. “Fair minded persons cannot accuse Awolowo of being part of the intellectual arm of a cabinet that intentionally initiated the pogrom of the Igbo, when in fact the record shows he took positive steps to persuade Ojukwu to avoid the conflict.”

Adebanjo said when the late politician visited Enugu prison during the war, he was surprised to see malnourished people even when adequate quantity of food were sent through international agencies to the civilians in the areas. Following this, he said the Federal Government stopped the delivery of food meant for the civilian population hijacked by Biafran soldier. He added, “This is what Achebe mischievously called the deliberate starvation of the Igbo.

I would like Prof. Achebe, if he can; to make reference to any publication where Awolowo made the statement that starvation was a legitimate tool of war. “One would have thought the charge of genocide should have been better directed at the leaders of Biafra who had first hand knowledge of the starvation in the area they controlled, and yet did not as they could, to bring an end to the war sooner before two million people, mainly members of future generations had died of starvation as Prof Achebe claimed.”

On change of currency, Adebanjo said since Biafran soldiers looted Nigerian currency from Central Bank locations in Biafra occupied areas and were using them to buy arms, Awolowo, as the Federal Commissioner for Finance, had to stop that.

We Did Not Kill the 40 students of Mubi Polytechnic - Boko Haram

The insurgent group, Jamaatu ahlis Sunnah lil daawati wal jihad, also known as Boko Haram, has denied carrying out the attack that claimed the lives of over forty persons, most of them students of tertiary institutions in Mubi, Adamawa State last week.

"We have no business with students or student politics. If students are our target we would have killed them randomly on sight and in their school and not sneak on them in the creeping darkness in an area occupied by both students and residents," he said.
He accused the JTF of hiding the casualty figure suffered by the force in various confrontations with the sect.
"We have killed a lot of security personnel in the north especially in Yobe and Borno state, far morethan the lies the JTF sell to you, media," he said; adding that "a significant number of our brothers were killed but most of the people the JTF have killed have nothing to do with us. They are just youths in the wrong place at the wrong time."

He said his sect was "not like the JTF that hide their casualties." "Yes, we suffered some casualties but I want to assure you that our structure, specialists and armpower are intact, and these crises will continue tillwe die," he said.

Qaqa alive, may have been captured A successful search operation in Kano, in September, by members of the JTF had led to thekilling of some of the sect's members and arrest of others. One of the arrested persons is believed to be Mr. Qaqa, according to top security sources.

The Boko Haram leader in his talk, like the evasivestatement of its overall leader, Abubakar Shekau, would however not confirm whether Mr. Qaqa hadbeen captured or not. "Our Imam has made it clear in his last video that Qaqa is alive, but I cannot answer your queries whether Qaqa is alive with us or with the security agencies," he said.

"I can assure you that we will not suffer any more defeat like we did in the past Insha Allah," he added

CBN returns N5bn illegal bank charges to customers

The Deputy Governor, Financial Services, CBN, Dr. Kingsley Moghalu, told the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions on Tuesday, that there had been a crisis of confidence between banks and their customers regarding charges on deposits.

He said, “In the next few years, between now and 2015, we will be focusing on consumer protection. There are ranges of bank charges that are acceptable.
“As I speak to you, we have recovered from the banks N5bn as wrong charges, which have been returned to Nigerians.”

He justified a recent circular that put embargo on further lending to bank debtors, who owed about $5bn, saying there were indications that financial indiscipline was rearing its ugly head again. “They will not be allowed to borrow until they start paying their debts.

This is to ensure that the gains from the reforms were not reversed,” he said. Moghalu also explained the economics of high interest rates, arguing that it was necessary to keep inflation at a stable rate, while sustaining the value of the naira. According to him, the reforms are not a destination, but a process that will continue so as to save the country from the effects of the global financial crisis.
