Demand has been made by NULGE over the death of man who plunged to death in WAEC’s collapsed elevator.

The management of Odi-Olowo Local Council Development Area, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria and National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, this morning picketed West Africa Examinations Council, WAEC, Yaba office over the death of a staff of the LCDA.
The council staff, Fatai Olalekan Odeniyi, died after falling from the 8th floor of the WAEC elevator last wednesday.

The demand placed are 1.The wife of the deceased should be employed by WAEC.
2.One billion naira should be given to the family
3.The three children should be sponsored throughout their educational level.
Nice demand alright.....but do you think any of these demands will be met?

The father of three who had gone to WAEC to obtain his O’level certificate before he met his untimely death, got his head smashed and body mangled. The aggrieved council’s staff and NULGE who stormed the examination body’s office as early as 7am, barricaded the office and prevented their staffs from gaining access into the compound.

They also brandished placards with inscriptions like: “An Injury To One Is Injury To All, Fatai will not die in vain, WAEC Officials Are Murderers, Alhaja W. Bello You Better Commit Suicide Before Its Too late and so on. NULGE President, Lagos State chapter, Comrade Lasisi Ayinde Adesanya while speaking with journalists, said that their reason for picketing WAEC was due to their insensitivity to the issue since the ugly incident happened.

He urged his people not to vandalise or attack police officers who were deployed at the gate to prevent violence, adding that they have not shown any sign that they are supporting WAEC since the unfortunate incident happened. “We are here because one of our members was gruesomely killed while he was here to obtain his certificate. He died after falling off the elevator which carried no sign that it was faulty.

The pictures on the placards carried by our people show the kind of harrowing experience he went through before he died. “He fell from the eighth floor and got his head smashed and all his ribs, hand, legs broken. Since the incident happened, we have written series of letters to WAEC without any response. We believe that if this situation is not redressed, it would repeat itself in the nearest future.

“The person we are talking about here is not an animal but a human being like them here in WAEC. Therefore, we are here to support our deceased member and his families and also to ensure that they are fully compensated by WAEC,” he said. Speaking on their demand from WAEC, Comrade Adesanya said: “we want them to employ his wife as well as make a monetary compensation in the sum of N1billion to his immediate family and aged mother. “We also want them to provide scholarship to his three children that he left behind and anything short of these will not be acceptable to us. This is our simple demand from WAEC to the deceased family,” he said.

Is this what is in vogue in Naija now

School bus catches fire leaving one pupil dead and burning 14 others in Ibadan,Oyo State.

What would you do if you were told that the car or bus you had paid for and put your child/friend/relation to school not only had battery problem, but  also had fuel dripping from underneath. And the last thing you were told was that the bus/car had caught fire?

This happened in Ibadan, this was how one of the victim’s parents reacted ( Mrs Jumoke Oderinde) whose two kids were among the children), slumped at the UCH after seeing the intensity of burns on his son.
Tragedy struck in Iyana-Church Ibadan, Oyo State, yesterday as one pupil whose name was given as Rachel, died and 14 others of Divine Wisdom Group of Schools, Amosun, Ibadan, aged between five and 11 got seriously burnt, when the bus conveying them to school suddenly caught fire.

Daily Sun investigation revealed that due to the severity of the burns, most of the pupils have been admitted at the emergency unit of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, where they have been placed on oxygen. The girl died on admission in hospital.

At least eight of the children were said to have suffered shock as a result of the incident, which threw Wakajaye, Iyana-Church, Maku, Amosun and other communities into confusion. Many parents who had their children in the school, especially, those whose children had been picked early in the morning rushed to the scene. It was gathered that the school bus, a Ford with registration number GR 329 LND had suddenly stopped working at Iyana-Church, besides Olorun-Esan filling station, forcing the driver to park the vehicle to ascertain what was amiss.

The driver, who is also a motor mechanic, was said to have asked the older ones among the pupils to come down to help him push the bus. While pushing the bus, the pupils were said to have called his attention to fuel dripping from under the vehicle, after which it caught fire.
The driver, whose name was given as Mr Sherif Ogundele told Daily Sun “The children called my attention to the fuel which was dripping from under the bus. I tried to check it but while I was trying to open up the engine, the bus caught fire.” About 15 pupils in the bus were said to have been seriously burnt, while those pushing it escaped unhurt.

Ogundele, whose son, Usman, a five-year-old nursery 2 pupil was among the victims of the fire incident also had his hand and leg burnt while trying to rescue children. “I was able to rescue about seven pupils before people later joined me”. Daily Sun learnt that but for the people who joined him in rescuing other children trapped in the bus, the damage would have been more severe. Ogundele added: “After I had checked and discovered that the bus had battery problem, I told the older ones among the children to assist me in pushing it, but they told me that fuel was dripping from underneath.

As I tried to open the engine, fire just emerged. That was how the bus got burnt. It was when I was trying to rescue the children that I also had my hand and leg burnt.” All the burnt pupils were later rushed to the UCH for proper medical attention in a commercial cab and motorcycles before one of them died in the hospital.

The school was deserted when Daily Sun visited as many parents were said to have withdrawn their children, while the proprietress, Mrs Oke Ejemuta and other teachers went to the UCH to monitor the children. Ejemuta was said to have ordered the school shut shortly after the incident. At the emergency unit of UCH, many of the victims’ parents wept uncontrollably after seeing the extent of burns on their children.
