Bishop Oyedepo's Winners' Chapel Accused Of Exploiting British Worshippers

According to Daily Mail, a Uk Based online News Source. A church run by a controversial multi-millionaire African preacher has been accused of ‘cynical exploitation’ after its British branch received £16.7 million in donations from followers who were told that God would give them riches in return.
Followers are ferried in double-decker shuttle buses to the church, handed slips inviting them to make debit card payments, and are even told obeying the ministry’s teachings will make them immune from illness.
Today’s Mail on Sunday revelations about the Winners’ Chapel movement have prompted the Charity Commission to review the charitable status  of the church – one of the fastest-growing in the UK.
Winners’ Chapel is part of a worldwide empire of evangelical ministries run by Nigeria’s wealthiest preacher David Oyedepo, who has an estimated £93 million fortune, a fleet of private jets and a Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Dubbed ‘The Pastorpreneur’, he was accused earlier this year of slapping the face of a young woman he said was a witch. The assault case was struck out but is being appealed. Branches of the church have sprung up in major UK cities in a huge recruitment drive centred on Mr Oyedepo’s ‘prosperity gospel’. This claims that congregants who make regular donations and pay tithes – a ten per cent levy on their income – will be rewarded financially by God.

Followers are urged to target vulnerable people such as the lonely, the sick, the homeless and the suicidal as potential candidates for conversion. Last night, Labour MP Paul Flynn said Winners’ Chapel was cynically exploiting supporters.

‘They [Winners’ Chapel] are making clearly spurious claims and it seems to be a cynical exploitation of the gullible,’ he said. Referring to the slapping incident, Mr Flynn added: ‘What is also alarming is the reported violence and the lack of respect for the status of women.

It’s taking us back to a previous age of ignorance and prejudice that we all thought the church had escaped.’ This newspaper’s investigation can further disclose: Congregants are handed a payment slip requesting payments using cheque, cash or debit card when they enter London’s Winners’ Chapel. Donations to the ministry in England almost doubled from £2.21 million to £4.37 million between 2006 and 2010. Mr Oyedepo’s superchurch in Nigeria received £794,000 or 73 per cent of the charitable donations paid out by the British Winners’ Chapel between 2007 and 2010.

This was despite claims in Africa that he is enriching himself at the expense of his devotees. The registered charity has spent £6.81 million on evangelism and ‘praise, worship and fellowship’. The church’s ‘Joseph Squad’ preaches in British prisons and has a weekly broadcast named ‘Liberation Hour’ on satellite and cable TV here. In the past three years, Winners’ Chapel churches have been established in Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds and Bradford, adding to those in London, Manchester, Dublin and Glasgow. An undercover Mail on Sunday reporter attended Sunday services at Winners’ Chapel’s ‘London HQ’ in Dartford, Kent, which attracts 1,000 congregants – chiefly African and Caribbean immigrants.

It is run like ‘a business conference’ by Mr Oyedepo’s son, David Oyedepo Jnr. Packed buses deliver singing worshippers from South-East London, Essex and Kent to the huge auditorium. The reporter saw a payment slip being given to every person entering the church encouraging them to donate money by cheque or cash or to fill in a form with their debit card details.

The slip said tithes should be paid separately using a ‘Kingdom Investment Booklet’ and the reporter was informed that payments could also be made by phone. A pastor told the worshippers: ‘You shall be financially promoted after this service in Jesus’s name if you are ready to honour the Lord therefore with all your givings, your tithes, your offerings, your Kingdom investment, your sacrifices.’

Congregants were told to fill in their slips and hold them above their heads while the donations were blessed A jet belong to Bishop Oyedepo The service was interspersed with testimonies. ‘I received a bill from the bank that I didn’t understand, so I prayed,’ said one congregant. ‘A few days later, the bank wrote to apologise for their mistake – Hallelujah!’ ‘Hallelujah,’ the audience shouted back. Congregants were told they could gain favour by persuading others to follow Mr Oyedepo’s teachings.

His son said: ‘Look around you. Someone is sick and already wishing he or she were dead, that is a fruit ripe to harvest. Someone is confounded and considering suicide as an option, that is another fruit that is ripe to harvest. ‘Someone else is lonely and wondering if there is any future for him, that is another fruit ripe to harvest. ‘Also there are many men and women, young and old that are homeless, these are fruits ripe to harvest.’

The reporter was taken, with 20 other new recruits, to a room where preachers gave sermons claiming acceptance of the Lord would prevent them ever being ill or suffering misfortune. The Mail on Sunday has seen video footage of Mr Oyedepo striking a woman across the face and condemning her to hell after she said she was a ‘witch for Jesus’. He attacked her in a Winners’ Chapel superchurch, believed to be in Nigeria, in front of worshippers.

A separate video shows him saying: ‘I slapped a witch here last year!’ In May, he was sued for £800,000 over the alleged assault. The case was struck out – a decision which is now reported to have been appealed. The Winners’ Chapel movement, also known as the Living Faith Church, has hundreds of churches in Nigeria and across Africa, the Middle East, the UK and the US. Mr Oyedepo has received fierce criticism in Africa.

One Nigerian journalist accused him of ‘leading a growing list of pastorpreneurs – church founders exploiting the passion and emotion that Christianity commands to feather their nests’. Catholic Cardinal Anthony Okogie criticised such preachers for placing materialism above Jesus’s message. He reportedly said: ‘They have been skinning the flock, taking out of the milk of the flock.’ Among Mr Oyedepo’s fleet of aircraft are said to be a Gulfstream 1 and Gulfstream 4 private jets. It is also claimed he and his wife, Faith, travel in expensive Jeeps flanked by convoys of siren-blaring vehicles.

He is the senior pastor of Faith Tabernacle, a 50,000-seat auditorium in Lagos reputed to be the largest church in the world, and runs a publishing company that distributes books carrying his message across the world. His other business interests span manufacturing, petrol stations, bakeries, water purification factories, recruitment, a university, restaurants, supermarkets and real estate. The latest addition is a commercial airline named Dominion Airlines.

A Charity Commission spokesman said: ‘The Charity Commission is currently assessing what, if any, regulatory role there is to play with regard to the complaints made against the World Mission Agency. It is important to clarify that this does not constitute an investigation at this stage.’ Winners’ Chapel administrator Tunde Disu declined to comment.

Nigerian couple allowed to keep alleged stolen baby by UK High Court

A Nigerian couple in the UK who could not have children, have been granted custody of a baby born in Nigeria, despite tests showing they were not the child’s biological parents.

The court’s ruling has created an uproar among charities, child and human rights groups who claim their story was a “charade” and might encourage trafficking. This is partly because of the manner in which the woman told the court she conceived and had a baby.

The couple who live in London but cannot be named for legal reasons failed to conceive a child despite undergoing IVF treatment in the UK.

BBC reports that they were said to be “desperate and distressed” after failed attempts to conceive and then travelled to Nigeria in 2010 where the woman began fertility treatment at a private clinic. She told the court that when she returned to the clinic months later, she was sedated.

When she regained consciousness she was handed a baby and told she had given birth. On her return to London, a GP raised concerns. The child was taken into care and a DNA test proved the child was not related to the couple. They then launched legal proceedings to get custody. But despite the fishy story about her conception and delivery, a High Court Judge, Mr Justice Coleridge said the pair were victims of the “most appalling scam“. He described them as “people of the highest calibre and of complete integrity” adding that he was ”deeply impressed by their humanity“.

On Thursday he awarded the parents custody of the child. This story sounds quite unbelievable. A woman claimed that she was tricked by a doctor into believing she had given birth while sedated and a Judge lets them go. She didn’t mention she was pregnant at any time, just sedated and then, here comes the baby. “When she regained consciousness she was handed a baby and told she had given birth.” Is this really possible? It seems like the couple just lied through their teeth to the judge and he decided to let them have custody of the child.

He probably thought it was in the best interest of the child for him or her to remain withe the couple, but I have to agree with the human rights groups that say it would encourage child trafficking. Surely this child must have its mother somewhere… Just as Andy Elvin, the chief executive of Children and Familes

Across Borders told the BBC “These unscrupulous people will exploit people for vast amounts of money. Behind every one of these children lies an actual birth mother. She has been coerced, she may have been kidnapped or raped. These children are not given up willingly.”

JTF Arrest Boko Haram Commander In Senator's Home

“A high-profile Boko Haram commander, one Shuaibu Mohammed Bama, who has been on the list of wanted terrorists … was arrested by task force troops in a serving senator’s house …,” the statement said of the arrest on Thursday in the home of a senator in Maiduguri, Borno state.

“He is in the custody of the (task force) and assisting in the investigation and has since made startling revelations.” In November 2011, Nigerian secret police said they had arrested an alleged Boko Haram spokesman with ties to Senator Aliyu Ndome.

The alleged links however appeared to involve local politics in Nigeria’s northeast. Nigerian authorities frequently exaggerate their efforts in arresting or cracking down on Boko Haram, which has carried out scores of bombings and shootings.

Violence linked to Boko Haram’s insurgency in northern and central Nigeria, including killings by security forces, is believed to have left more than 2,800 people dead since 2009.

Another Killing of more UNIPORT students in the host community

Another killing I UNIPORT, three persons including another student of the institution have been shot dead at Choba, one of the university’s host communities.

Also killed in the Thursday night incident were the student’s girlfriend and a young man who had just completed his national service in Port Harcourt.

There is uneasy calm in UNIPORT’s host communities, especially Omuokiri-Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State, over threats of reprisals by kinsmen of the four students who were lynched on October 5.

The three latest victims were shot at close range at about 10 pm on Thursday by unknown gunmen driving a sport utility vehicle (SUV). The names of the victims were unavailable at press time. It was learnt that the deceased persons had gone out for a drink to celebrate the passing out of the NYSC member , but on their way back rammed into a shop with their car.

It was gathered that the owner of the shop accosted the occupants of the car. An argument soon ensued between the two parties and in a matter of minutes, the gunmen arrived the scene and opened fire on the trio. They then zoomed off without taking anything from their victims. The Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the incident, but said he had no details.

The Deputy Registrar (Information) of the university, Dr. Williams Wodi, in a telephone interview yesterday said: “After the protest of October 8, UNIPORT was shut on October 9. I am not in a position to comment on students who ought to be in their parents’ homes. We are awaiting police reaction.” Meanwhile,Omuokiri-Aluu where four students of UNIPORT were murdered on October 5, is tensed following alleged threats by kinsmen of the murdered students to attack the community.

The victims, Biringa Chiadika Lordson (20), Year Two, Theatre Arts, U2010/1805036; Ugonna Kelechi Obuzor (18), Year Two, Geology, U2010/5565149; Mike Lloyd Toku (19), Year Two, Civil Engineering, U2010/3010094 and Tekena Erikena (20), a Certificate student in the Faculty of Education, were lynched for allegedly stealing mobile phones and laptops. Spokesman for the umbrella organisation of Aluu Clan, the Ogbakor Aluu, Mr. Garshon Benson, said the threats to attack Omuokiri-Aluu were real.

Benson urged security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities, with a view to preventing further destruction of lives and property. Two of the lynched students hailed from Okrika in Rivers State. The murder sparked a massive protest at Choba Junction on the East-West Road on October 9.

Nigerian embassy in Berlin attacked

The Nigerian Embassy in Berlin was attacked with paint bombs on Wednesday night by unknown persons, the police have said.

According to police spokesman, unknown attackers threw glass bottles filled with a thick and sticky liquid at the front of the building in Neue Jakobstrabe, (The name of the street where the embassy is situated).

The spokesman said the police have handed over the investigation of the incident to state security authorities, adding that political motive may not be ruled out in the attack. The police said security workers noticed the damage to the building on Thursday morning.

The spokesman said that on Monday, 120 activists, members of the "Refugee Protest March in Berlin campaign" gathered in front of the Nigerian Embassy to demonstrate against the practice of deporting asylum seekers from Germany. According to him, 14 of the activists illegally entered to the embassy, in order to "occupy'' it as part of the protest march.

He explained that those who entered the premises were later ejected by security officials while 25 of the protesters were temporarily detained and later released. The spokesman stated that the demonstrators accused the embassy workers of "working closely with the German state to ensure that the processing of the largest number of deportations from Africa came from Nigeria''.

He emphasised that his agency would, however, investigate if there was a connection between the attempted occupation of the embassy on Monday and the recent paint attack on Wednesday night to the early hours of Thursday.

Top Ten Nollywood stars who failed in their attempt at MUSIC

These is what has been on social media:
Nollywood stars who decided to spread their tentacles to the music industry, the most asked question is what is the main reason for them diverting to this?

No.10
OMOTOLA JALADE-EKEINDE:
She is one of the best and celebrated Nollywood diva. She is highly successful as an actress, but several attempts by the beautiful wife of pilot Mathew Ekeinde at music has been nothing to write home about, despite being an established celebrity.
She was one of the thespians that tried their luck in music in 2005 after they were banned by the then Ejike Asiegbu led AGN regime. In that year, she released a single entitled Gba, and was followed by a video and album. But despite the massive hype, the album was indeed a failure.
She has released another album and songs like Missing You and Feel Alright, but yet, she has made little or no impact in the music industry.

No.9
GENEVIEVE NNAJI:
Genny, as she is fondly called, is the most celebrated Nollywood actress both in Nigeria and abroad. In 2005 after she was also suspended from acting, Genevieve also took a shot on music with the release of the song No More. She went on to get a mouthwatering recording deal in Ghana, but it wasn’t even enough to make her a force to reckon with in the music industry. She is one of those Nollywood stars who failed in their attempt at music.

No.8

ANITA JOSEPH: Until early this year when she announced that she was now a born again Christian, Anita was hitherto referred to as a Nollywood bad girl. Though she was enmeshed in a lot of controversies, Anita has proved her mettle as one of the future talents in Nollywood. Between the years 2008/2009, she released a single and consequently performed in a couple of shows, including the News of The People Awards held at Sheraton Hotels, Lagos. Even at that, she is yet to make any spectacular statement as a singer. She dropped two new gospel singles, claiming that God directed her to do so during the fuel subsidy removal nationwide strike.
No7. Jim Iyke

The controversial actor, Jim Iyke. The former Globacom ambassador also romanced music when he released the song, Who Am I, featuring one of Nigeria’s finest, Tuface Idibia. Jim, whose genre of music is rap, was actually keen on making a statement musically and he spent a fortune on radio and television hypes. Yet, his music career was short of being a success. The actor also did another entitled Born To Do This and featured Mike Word and Puffy T on it, but it did not make any good impact either. NKEM OWOH (Osuofia)
No.6

Popularly referred to as Osuofia, Nkem Owoh is a highly successful actor. At a time, he was the highest paid Nollywood actor, raking millions from every script that comes his way, but when he decided to grab the microphone and consequently released the song, I Go Chop Your Dollar, it was not on a bed of roses. The audio and video of the song were banned on air due to its lyrical content. Osuofia went ahead to record another song, Olamma, but it was also short of being a success.

No.5 COSSY ORJIAKOR:

Though this naturally endowed actress has a sonorous voice, it was obviously not enough to give her a hit in the music industry. She has recorded a couple of songs and also shot videos, but they were not enough to guaranty her musical success. One of her songs is entitled Me and You.

No.4 JOHN OKAFOR (Mr Ibu)

Mr. Ibu, John is a highly skilled and successful actor who has carved a niche for himself. Regarded as one of the most hilarious actors in Nigeria, Mr. Ibu has severally claimed that he has a good singing voice. He actually released an audio/video album some years back, but it cannot be regarded as a success. He had since stick to his original talent-acting.
No3. SHAN GEORGE:

She is an actress of note, but like her colleagues, Shan’s attempts at making hits through music have so far been futile. She has an album and has performed in a couple of gigs, including the annual Felabration. For obvious reasons, she is one of the movie stars who could not make impact as singers.

No.2 LILIAN BACH: The half-caste actress, had also tried her hands in music, but she was quick enough to withdraw, perhaps after realising that it was a tough terrain for her.

No.1

TONTO DIKEH: And our number 1 of course is no other person than the "Rave of the Moment" LOL.. Tonto Dikeh The recent release of her two new singles have been met with so much hate and rejection. Recently, a Nollywood producer refered to her attempt at singing as a TERRIBLE TREMELO Ever since she released her singles "Hi"and "Itz Over" Fans home and abroad have made it clear that they don't seem to accept her detour into Music. They practically pulled out all stops just to show their Displeasure.

Funny reactions like this

We also got this from facebook on Tonto Dikeh's reaction to critics of her Song This was what she said: This was her response"I wanted to do music that millions would listen to and I have achieved that. Bigger things ahead for all of us. Thanks. 'Hi', Itz Ova. POKO,"

PHCN official electrocuted in Ado-Ekiti

An official of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Mr. Samuel Isaac, was yesterday electrocuted in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

Isaac was working on an electric cable at Satellite Junction on NTA Road when the incident occurred. Residents wept at the sight of the body, which was stuck on the high tension pole.

It was learnt that the deceased, who appeared to be middle-aged, was a graduate of Electrical/Electronics Engineering from the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke.

An eyewitness said a cable got detached while Isaac was working on a 33KVA high tension cable and it fell on him, killing him instantly. His charred remains were deposited at the mortuary of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.

Ekiti PHCN spokesman Mr. Kayode Brown said the victim and other PHCN staff were in the area to correct some faults that had caused power outage. Brown said he was shocked by the incident because the late Isaac was experienced in the job and had been working with the company since for years.

He said: “We have to get to the root of this matter because back-feeding cases are very rare while working on high tension cables.

Nobody uses generator that could warrant such situation, so we are at a loss about the cause of his death.”

Ado-Ekiti Local Government Chairman Sunday Ibitoye, who was one of the early callers at the scene of the incident, described the situation as unfortunate.

AY Apologizes To Keke Ogungbe And D1 Over Grammy Awards Joke

Popular comedian Ayo ‘AY’ Makun has apologized to media moguls Kenny ‘Keke’ Ogungbe and Dayo ‘D1’ Adeneye for saying a joke about the Primetime Africa bosses which they found derogatory.

The joke “ we all saw an advert on television confirming that Kenny and D One were going to cover the Red Carpet at the last Grammy Awards in America for our viewing pleasure back home in Nigeria, Only for us to find the two of them interviewing their own artiste Jawon (around an American 3rd Mainland Bridge very far from the venue) without having access to the venue and foreign celebs at the event”

AY explained that it was only a ‘harmless joke that meant neither vilification nor slight’. He further explained that the ‘joke was only a spontaneous exaggeration by a comedian who needed to just lie to the world and make a living from it’.

Here is the letter of apology

Dear Sirs,

It is with deep sense of respect that I greet you. With profound esteem as well, we appreciate your invaluable roles in the growth of the Nigerian music industry in particular, and the entertainment industry in general. What the combination of your robust personalities means to most of us is nothing short of being a blessing to our generation as enviable mentors.

My own respect is not just fraternal, but somewhat avuncular as well. You have been championing the business of entertainment with phenomenal contributions as veteran producers and all-encompassing showbiz personalities. Thus it wouldn’t be out of place if something like a knock descends from on high, directly from the ancestors and lands on the head of any of us, your very junior colleagues for disrespecting the colossuses in the entertainment industry.

As a standup comedian I have come to discover that various sectors of the global entertainment industry are systematically tied together like a bunch of firewood. It is practically the case of a healthy rapport of mutual promotion. It is what has enhanced the meteoric upswing of the Nigerian entertainment industry. The story of the comedy industry, which I happen to be part of, is equally making headlines. And yet, not without some mutations in line with the spirit of our time. As a matter of fact, dynamism and creativity are attributes of the entertainment industry. Hence, the comedian has transcended the era of tortoise-squirrel tales, rooster-and-bull story, narrative rambles, and redundant fart jokes. Comedy has beautifully developed into social commentary, what the public can exhilaratingly identify with without ado. Regrettably, the content of comedy in most cases has shifted from just anybody to celebrities. Today, the big enchiladas and the Mr Somebody have come to have a place in the comic chat. And it is simply a waste of time and words querying why it is so. Therefore, it doesn’t sound bizarre to anybody anymore that the American president has been the focal point of many American comedians. While alive, Mark Twain and George Carlin never spared the American government. But the government spared them, digested the humour in what they were saying and left them in their clownish babbles. Actually comedians and clowns are brothers – nobody takes them seriously even though they habitually provoke serious laughter. Nevertheless, no comedic license to insult folks is intended.

Obviously, it is not just about the American president. With due respect, it must be stated that other highly influential parsonages across the globe are involved. More still, Her Majesty, the Queen and His Holiness, the Pope are not excluded from the humorous drama. What do they do? They only smile and overlook the facile act of the jester, or at best call on him to put more smiles on people’s faces. We are indeed in a world of humour. Coming home, if OBJ had paid any serious attention to the flimsy rants of comedians about him, for sure, the king of comedy Alibaba and some of my colleagues would by now be staggering with castrated tongues or even conduced to the fate of extinct dinosaurs. To him we all pay homage for his paternal encouragement to the industry, but more for providing inexhaustible materials for our business to thrive. In the same vein, Tuface Idibia, Wande Coal, Dele Momodu, Weird MC, Segun Arinze, Chris Okotie, Don Jazzy, Banky W, Tonto Dikeh, D’Banj, Omobaba, Alibaba, the Jonathans and others deserves constant applause as well for having not drawn the sword of enmity against me and my colleagues. I am very sure that who ever is reading this piece can relate the above mentioned names to numerous jokes done by comedians. The truth of the matter is that only those revered by society enter into the contemporary comical repertoire. Please may all VIP’s note this down.

In other to flee parochialism in this slim letter, let me quickly draw our attention to a relevant point from one of the fathers of African literature. Achebe writes: ‘Some years ago at an international writers’ meeting in Sweden, a Swedish writer and journalist said to a small group of us Africans present: “You fellows are lucky. Your governments put you in prison. Here in Sweden nobody pays any attention to us no matter what we write.” We apologized profusely to him for his misfortune and our undeserved luck!’ (Chinua Achebe, The Education of a British-Protected Child, London, Penguin, 2011, p. 121) If it were like this for intellectuals like Swedish writers and journalists, how would it be for the lame Swedish comedians? Definitely worse! It must be noted that this manner of apathy towards comedians is replicated across the civilized world. I guess the point should have been clear by now.

Dear Kennis Music, permit me to modestly state that it was an harmless joke that meant neither vilification nor slight when I said “ we all saw an advert on television confirming that Kenny and D One were going to cover the Red Carpet at the last Grammy Awards in America for our viewing pleasure back home in Nigeria, Only for us to find the two of them interviewing their own artiste Jawon (around an American 3rd Mainland Bridge very far from the venue) without having access to the venue and foreign celebs at the event”.

That joke was only a spontaneous exaggeration by a comedian who needed to just lie to the world and make a living from it.The naivety and clumsiness in attacking you aside, you and I know very well that any attack on you by any comedian is as pointless as a wild-goose chase.

However, my sincere apologies if I exaggerated in my jokes. Please no harm was intended. It was rather a confirmation of your significance to society. The several great artistes you created will witness better to this than my little self. Again, by ‘agelessness’ I intended the lasting glamour of your presence in the entertainment industry, and the future and perpetuity you stand for in the music enterprise. This is it; no equivocation was intended. Please forgive and forget. Best regards.

Sincerely,

AY
