Policeman beaten to pulp by Gov Rochas Okorocha’s ADC

Reports have emerged suggesting that the Aide-de-Camp to the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Mr. Omo Gabriel, along with two other police officers on Saturday, allegedly beat up a policeman attached to the state government house for his delay in opening the gate for the governor’s convoy, leaving him unconscious.
The mobile policeman, Corporal Itere Ewedor, was said to have been on duty in his place of assignment around noon, when Okorocha returned from the birthday party of his wife on the same day.
A friend to the assaulted officer, Mr. David Edhie, confirmed the story to journalists, as the victim was said to be resting at the time.

According to Edhie, “When the governor’s convoy got to the gate, the men of the civil defence corps and members of the Imo orientation corps, who were supposed to open the gate, were not around. So, there was a delay. Then my friend went to open the gate. “When the convoy drove in, the ADC and some other police officers came down and asked him why he delayed. They wanted to collect his gun, but he refused. So, they started beating him.

They beat him until he became unconscious, with bruises all over his face and parts of his body.” He further revealed that the ADC took Ewedor, in his unconscious state, to Shell Camp Police Station and requested that he be detained. In his words, “The police officers at the station refused. They said they could not detain someone that was dying. Then Gabriel made arrangements for Ewedor to be taken to the Federal Medical Centre Owerri, where he was admitted. After sometime, he regained consciousness.” Ewedor was eventually discharged from the hospital around 5pm on Saturday, allegedly by Gabriel, because journalists were trooping to the hospital to confirm the sotry. Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Information and Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Mr. Chinedu Offor, denied the report, saying that nothing of such happened.

When contacted, Offor denied the incident, saying , “The ADC to Governor Okorocha is a true professional, there is no way he could have descended so low to physically assault somebody. In order not to scare people away, we use men of the civil defence corps at the gate. We don’t use policemen at the gates of the government house. “So, if anybody says a policeman was beaten up for refusing to open the gate, it is false. I was at the government house around 12:30am. Such a thing never happened.”

Ojukwu’s Will tears family apart

Widow of late Biaf-ran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odu-megwu Ojukwu, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, and her children were said to have been more favoured than their other relations in the sharing of their father’s property as Ojukwu’s Will was read at the Enugu High Court yesterday.

The Will which was expected to have brought peace to the family now wrangling over who should control the assets left behind by the late Ikemba Nnewi since his demise on November 26, last year, has however been rejected by some of the beneficiaries through Emeka Ojukwu jnr. In rejecting the Will which was read at the High Court by the Chief Registrar, Enugu Judiciary and Probate, Mr Dennis Ekoh, Ojukwu jnr called it a ruse.

They accused Bianca and her lawyer of allegedly causing trouble with the issue. ’’What I have to say about the Will is my position on it. It is Bianca and the lawyer that are doing what they are doing. We are waiting for the Will to be read; then I can make a statement on it. For the Will to be read, all of us, my brothers and all the beneficiaries would have to be present. And if the Will does not reflect the wish of my father, which we all know, we shall go to court,’’ he said. Earlier, Bianca and her two sons had dragged Ojukwu’s brothers before the Lagos High Court over the control of Ojukwu Transport Limited’s, OTL’s, property situated at No. 29 Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi,Lagos, where Ojukwu once resided. The Will which was read by Mr. Ekoh also threw up some surprises when an ‘unknown’ name Tenny Harman was mentioned as number one among the late Ojukwu’s children.

There were to be more shockers as the name of Sylvester Ojukwu popularly called “Dede” was conspicuously omitted from the list endorsed by Ojukwu himself as his children just as Emeka Ojukwu (Jnr) only got a property in Umudim Nnewi, Ojukwu’s hometown as his entitlement. After appointing Bianca, the late Igwe of Oraukwu, Emeka Ojukwu and James Chukwuneme as trustees and executors of the will the names of the children were next; and the late Ikemba stated that only the eight listed and no other person should be regarded as his children.

The eight children listed are Tenny Harman, Emeka Ojukwu, Mmegha, Okigbo, Ebele, Chineme, Afam, and Nwachukwu. Bianca who arrived the Enugu High Court premises in a black Prado Jeep at about 8:30 could not hide her surprise when the strange name of Tenny was mentioned among Ojukwu’s children as she started whispering with family members in the registrar’s office with her. Apart from Bianca, other family members who were in court to listen to the Chief Registrar included Mr. Mike Ezemba and Mr Val Nwosu; Ojukwu’s first cousin. They however declined comments on the matter as they left in different vehicles that brought them to the court premises. Bianca, who is currently Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain would be all smiles later as the will awarded her Ojukwu’s Enugu mansion ‘Casabianca’ located at No: 7 Forest Crescent GRA, which the late Ikemba Nnewi had named after her. She is to also replace Ojukwu on the board of the Ojukwu Transport Limited, OTL, or appoint a representative in the management board. Bianca heaved a sigh of relief as the Will clearly gave her a stake in the controversial O TL.

The company was founded by Ojukwu’s father, Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu who died in 1966, but left several assets behind for his children especially inLagosunder the OTL. Ojukwu transferred his interest in the company to his widow and children in the Will which reads inter alia, “Bianca and her children should take over my place at my transport…she may also wish to appoint somebody to represent her at the board…” Bianca also got two properties located at plot 20 Jabi Abuja, with Certificate of Occupancy number 4405, as well as another property located at Kuje,Abuja. The late Eze-Igbo also willed all his personal effects, monies and cars for Bianca and her children’s upkeep. He also allotted to Bianca two hectares of land at Umuezeani Umudim Nnewi, ‘’If she does not remarry.’’ Ojukwu’s strange daughter Tenny, who was said to be unknown to members of the family before now, was allotted Jubilee Hotels,Zaria; but when the will was read it was observed that the hotel had been sold thus she would receive the proceeds from the sale.

For the former Commissioner inAnambraState, Emeka Ojukwu, who was generally regarded as Ojukwu’s first son, it was not a fair deal as he got only a house in Umudim Nnewi. Ojukwu further willed a hectare of land each to all his daughters but directed that his Nnewi property is “to remain a binding legacy to us for generations to come.“

Fashola Arrest a police officer for breaking one of the Okada rules

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday arrested a police officer who rode a 100CC engine motorcycle popularly called Okada on the Agege Motor Road, Ikeja.

The officer, Mr. Ebahan Johnson was accosted on the ever busy express road by the Governor during an inspection of projects in the Lagos-West senatorial district.

Johnson, who had earlier resisted arrest, surrendered on realising it was the Governor. Fashola had warned that Okada should not ply the express road with a motorcycle with such capacity and without helmet.

Fashola said: “There is no one that is above the law. If anyone cannot submit itself to the law of the state, then that person should please leave.” He warned that the state government will not condone any act by anyone violating the state’s road traffic law which was signed to bring sanity into road transportation. “There is no society where laws are not broken but the state government will increase its enforcement in order for residents to comply with the law. And as we move on the road and we see any one violating the law, we will stop and arrest them”, Fashola said. On the officer, the governor stated that the officer would be handed to the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko for proper prosecution. “I am sure he would be prosecuted,” he said.

Army to kick civilians out of military barracks nationwide

The eviction of non-soldiers from barracks is coming on the heels of two successful attacks by suspected terrorists in the first two days of this week.

Two car bombers had on Sunday struck at the St. Andrew Military Protestant Church inside the prestigious Armed Forces Command and Staff College, in Jaji, near Kaduna. The college houses the officers and men of the Infantry Centre and School as well as the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre .

Also on Monday, gunmen, numbering 40, launched an attack on the office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja, where suspects were being held. Two policemen and one of the gunmen were killed in the incident.

Ihejirika said at the closing of the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference in Asaba, Delta State, that he had already issued a directive to commanders in charge of military formations to take immediate action in ridding the military formations of illegal occupants. The COAS also warned that the leadership of the Army would ensure that reported lapses were treated decisively.

He said, “That one (purging the barracks of illegal occupants) is obvious. I have already informed the commanders and they know. The commanders would not wait for the Chief of Army Staff before taking action. Rather, from next week, I want to see action in respect of illegal squatters and similar things.” The Commander in charge of Army Engineering, Maj. Gen. Olaniyi, who took the last presentation at the conference, had called attention to the fact that barracks being rehabilitated were accommodating a large number of civilians in places like the Ikeja Cantonment and Asaba. Olaniyi, who said that the Ojo Cantonment had become haven for criminals, warned that unless decisive steps were taken, even foreigners would be more than soldiers in some rehabilitated barracks. He had said that the number of civilians living in the cantonment was even more than that of soldiers. Ihejirika insisted that the bombing at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College was avoidable, stressing that absence a perimeter fence did not offer any commander an excuse to allow such an incident to happen. He said that about 80 of the barracks in the country had not been fenced and urged the commanders to put in their best in the area of intelligence gathering and security maintenance. Meanwhile, Ihejirika has promised Nigerians “a more comprehensive action by the military and all the security agencies” in 2013. He said that the military would be decisive in 2013, stressing that it was part of the decision of the conference that unit commanders must pay more attention to effective liaison, supervision and monitoring of personnel under them. The COAS said, “Nigerians should expect more comprehensive action by the military and all the security agencies. Part of the decisions arrived at is that unit commanders should liaise more and they should supervise and monitor their personnel more closely than they had done in the past. So 2013 would be decisive.” He said that the Nigerian Army had been collaborating with other security agencies, including the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Intelligence Agency and foreign bodies to enhance intelligence gathering and dissemination. He said the conference also agreed on the need for “national intelligence fusion” to enhance intelligence gathering.

He said, “The conference also emphasised the need for national intelligence fusion. What it means is that all the various measures are going to be fast tracked to ensure that intelligence is further enhanced. “And you should know that it is a running battle because the people you are fighting are people within the country. So they know what measures you are even taking. They know that. So that is why I also drew the attention of commanders to devise new tactics in dealing with the problem. “Certain groups are going to be set up too to monitor the commanders in the field and, no mistake about it, command responsibility is one area we will emphasise more next year.” Ihejirika also ordered the painting of all operational vehicles of the Nigerian Army donated by state governments, corporate bodies, in Army colour.

He also said that the different uniforms of the Army should be used only for authorised specified activities. Also on Thursday, the Agence France Presse reported that Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, had expressed solidarity with global jihadists, saying the United States and Britain “should witness that we are with our mujahedeen brothers.” Shekau, in the 39-minute video posted on jihadists forum, was quoted to have said in Arabic that,”The world should witness, and America, Britain, Nigeria and other crusaders, meaning America and Britain, should witness, and the Jews of Israel who are killing the Muslims in Palestine should witness… that we are with our mujahedeen brothers in the cause of Allah everywhere.”

Basketmouth and owners of the other fun spots affected as police raid mainland

According to report the raid scared away many patrons which has led to loss of millions of naira in revenue.

On Friday November 23rd, the Nigerian police, without warning or any particular reason, raided four clubs located on University Road, Akoka, Yaba Lagos. The raid, led by the DPO from Yabo-Sabo police station, affected Basketmouth's EmBARssy lounge located at 12 University Rd, where at least 10 individuals were arrested without any reason.

They were released the next day. The police officers were said to have harassed and arrested people at will in the midnight raid which saw them roving all around the clubs and lounges in three Black-Maria and two Hilux vehicles. However, one club (Road Runners) which was relaunching that same night was not raided like the others in the neighbourhood, prompting other patrons to ask questions.

Please continue... People are alleging that the owners of Road Runners (Diran and Sobowale) may have deliberately used the police to frustrate EmBARssy Lounge, which has since become the most patronized fun spot in in the area. Basketmouth and owners of the other fun spots affected by the raid are planning to petition the Lagos State Commissioner of Police against the action of the Sabo-Yaba police station officers, as the raid reportedly scared away many patrons which has led to loss of millions of naira in revenue. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has described the allegation of being biased as unfounded and an act of wickedness. Reacting on the police raid, the PPRO, Ngozi Braide told reporters that the affected club owners were only being sentimental. "It is not possible for any club or lounge to control the Lagos State Police Command and the commissioner of Lagos.

That is wickedness on the part of anybody insinuating this. It was a joint operation by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and Area C. It happened in the early hours of saturday. They targeted black spots" Braide explained.
