Switzerland to Sign Agreement on Return of $321 stolen by late Abacha

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, disclosed this on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a meeting with a Swiss delegation led by the country’s Federal Councillor and Head of its Foreign Affairs Department, Mr. Didier Burkhalter, and the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Eric Mayoruz. Professor Yemi Osinbajo says once everything has been concluded , the money will be made available to the public and it would cover the whole spectrum from the source of the stolen asset to how it would be managed once recovered. He said: “The framework will guarantee that returned assets will be used in the interest of the people of this country.”

Osinbajo told the Swiss government that the $321 million Abacha loot to be returned to Nigerian would be used judiciously. He said Nigerian government welcomed the decision of the Swiss to return the Abacha loot. Osinbajo said: “We guarantee that recovered assets would be put to uses for which they have been intended.” Commending the Swiss government assistance in repatriating the country’s stolen assets, the vice-president said the federal government appreciated her laudable efforts, noting that the “Swiss has always been at the forefront of returning stolen assets and ensuring that the people of Nigeria get the benefit.”

Later, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), signed an agreement described as a “Letter of Intent” between the Swiss and Nigerian governments on the restitution of illegally-acquired assets forfeited in Switzerland. Burkhalter signed the letter on behalf of Swiss government. Under the agreement, the Swiss government will award to Nigeria $321 million “of funds illicitly acquired by the Abacha’s family, initially deposited in Luxembourg and confiscated by the Judiciary of the Republic and canton of Geneva pursuant to a Forfeiture order .

A woman left in an elevator for a month dies

This is what they call negligence, how could elevator maintenance crew had forgotten their primary role….Safety of users…..Take  a read

woman's corpse was discovered in an elevator in the Chinese city of Xi'an which has led to the detention of an elevator maintenance crew who improperly cut off power to the elevator a month ago without checking if anyone was inside or not.

In a statement posted Saturday, the Gaoling district government said two maintenance workers turned off the power source on Jan. 30 to the elevator in a residential building after they were called to check on a glitch without making sure it was empty first.

When they returned a month later, on March 1, for repairs, they found a female corpse there, the government said. The woman was identified as a 43-year-old resident who was living by herself. Police ruled out any foul play but concluded her death was caused by the gross negligence on the part of the maintenance crew in a case of involuntary manslaughter, the government said.

18 people die from the collapse of a building in Lekki, Lagos

A five-storey building under construction collapsed in lekki, yesterday
Among the 18 people, a woman and a child were included, thirteen people were rescued from the rubble by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)

NEMA SouthWest media coordinator Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed the death toll and the number of those rescued. The incident occurred at Horizon 1, Lekki Gardens in Ikate, at about 3am when it was raining heavily. Many workers believed to have been trapped in the building. It was learnt that the occupants were workers on the site and squatters who slept in the building after giving a tip to security men. Lekki Gardens, the owners of the building, claimed to have ordered stoppage of work in January at the site when it was discovered that substandard materials were being used. As at 4:30pm, bodies were still being retrieved from the building. Residents of the area were assisting emergency workers. Some of the victims are Beninoise.

It was also learnt that a woman and her two children who came to Nigeria on Monday from Cotonou were among those who remained trapped in the rubble last night. The woman was said to have travelled to Lagos since her husband had not visited the family for some time..According to an iron bender, Fidelis Anjolo, the woman did not believe her husband’s story that he was being owed as a result of which he could not travel back to see his family. An artisan, Mathew Ademola, who claimed that seven Beniniose were brought to work on Monday evening, said they were missing. He said a food vendor simply identified as Hauwa remained unaccounted for. A resident of the area, Remi, said she was searching for her brother Femi. The disturbed woman said his number was not going through. She said: “My brother is a bricklayer. He lives in Alagbado (on the outskirts of Lagos) with his wife and children but could not afford to be going home everyday because of the transport cost.

“I don’t know what to do. I have checked the bodies but he is not there. Our sister has also been trying his phone number but it is not reachable. This is pathetic. He has been catering for our needs since the death of our parents. What will be our fate if he dies?” A carpenter, Mutiu Gani, said he and some of his friends pay security men to sleep in the building at night, adding that four of his friends were trapped. An interior decorator blamed those handling the estate for underpaying workers, adding that he was owed N317,000. “I have slept under the sun and in the rain as well as suffered mosquito bites. I sold my power bank to raise transport fare to this site on Monday so that I can get my money, but they have not paid me,” he said.
