Fire set ablaze in the commercial residence in Ebute Metta

A wild fire Tuesday evening cut through an entire commercial residence in Ebute Metta, Lagos. The fire, on Market Street, near Oko-Baba Sawmill, started at about 5.10pm and had taken down most of the wooden homes and offices standing in the rural yard before fire service personnel arrived.

The origin of the fire was yet to be determined, but some of the affected residents said it may have been a result of petro-chemical reaction to some cooking activities done under one of the roofs.

Jonathan pays nearly N1billion to the family of late President Umaru Yar'Adua

The presidency has paid nearly N1billion to the family of late President Umaru Yar'Adua.

The slush funds were routed through the Katsina state government, the home state of the former president.

The payment includes about N150 million to Mrs. Turai Yar'adua, as well as the late president's aged mother, his married daughters, and sons

It is yet unclear if any provision was made for his second wife, Hauwa Umar Radda, whom the late president divorced in 1997, shortly before he became the governor of Katsina state.

Although she has received the biggest payout, it would be recalled that it was the controversial former First Lady, Turai, who pushed Nigeria to the brink of a political crisis between 2009 and May 2010 while her husband was hospitalized in Saudi Arabia.

He eventually returned and died inside the Aso Rock Villa. Mrs. Yar'Adua was at the head of a cabal of Ministers, aides and security agents that manipulated the nation for many tense months as they clung to power, almost leading to the collapse of the government.

Man, 70, marries 15-year-old, after her parents sold her for $20,000

A 70-year-old man has married a 15-year-old girl in Saudi Arabia, human rights workers confirmed on Tuesday. The 15-year-old was sold to her husband.

CNN interviewed the man, who said the girl’s parents sold her to him for the equivalent of $20,000. The marriage came to light when the man complained to a local official, saying the girl’s family had taken her back and he’d been ripped off.

He refused to provide his name to CNN. His account is countered by human rights workers looking into the case. They believe there was a fight between the teen and the man, and she ran back to her family. Her father is believed to be Yemeni, her mother Saudi. She is from Al-Hurath village in Jizan province, in southwestern Saudi Arabia near the border with Yemen.

That’s according to Dr. Hadi Al-Yami, the head of the Asir branch of the Human Rights Commission, a Saudi government supported organization. The commission sent an investigator to the courthouse in Al-Hurath, Al-Yami said. The organization is planning to offer the girl as much help as she’s able to receive, particularly legal help in case the courts require her to formally dispute the marriage.
