Asiwaju Bola Tinubu Takes Over Prime Property

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has taken over a prime property that was once the headquarters of Ikoyi-Obalande Local Government Development Area and relocated the local government secretariat to Obalende, a district in the commercial city of Lagos.

The huge and strategic parcel of land located at the junction of Alfred Rewane Road (Kingsway Road) and Glover Road in highbrow Ikoyi has been demolished to make way for prime construction believed to be blocks of serviced luxury flats.

The acquisition of the property is coming on the heels of the ACN’s defeat in the local government chairmanship election for Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area by the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, Mr. Ibrahim Babatunde Obanikoro. The politician has also cornered the contract to reconstruct Glover Road using a proxy company P.W. Nigeria Limited.

Though THEWILL has not been able to get details of the transaction, several sources say the politician is recklessly acquiring properties in prime locations across the state with the assistance of current Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN). Tinubu’s acquisitions since he left office cuts across real estate, media and aviation. His company AlphaBeta Consulting collects all Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for Lagos State and some ACN controlled states. It gets to keep a sizeable chunk for itself. AlphaBeta is believed to rake in as much as N7 billion naira monthly as commission for its work.

 The politician is also believed to own FirstNation Airlines, The Nation Newspaper, stakes in Oriental Hotel Victoria Island, Renaissance Hotel Ikeja, Eko Hotel Lagos, and the yet to be completed InterContinental Hotel located along Kofo Abayomi Street, near the popular Mega Plaza in Victoria Island. Tinubu also owns TV Continental (TVC) and Radio Continental. The former Governor who was engulfed in a University certificate scandal during his tenure as Governor, also owns a huge shopping mall complex in Alausa, Ikeja, popularly called Shoprite by its mainland patrons.

THEWILL gathered that the shopping complex was constructed on a large parcel of land believed to have been hijacked from the Lagos State Government. In a similar gestapo-style move, the governor also bullied Lagosians and acquired the Lekki-Epe highway, reconstructed and tolled the road under a highly controversial agreement.

Why Nigerian applicants are refused US visas

Vice-Consul, United States Consulate, Lagos, Mr. Christopher Richardson, says many applicants are refused American visas because they have not visited other countries.

Richardson spoke at a seminar on the ‘American Visa Regime: the role of lawyers’ organised by the Immigration Lawyers Forum in Lagos on Tuesday.

He said, “The majority of the visa applicants prefer the US as their first outing. This creates doubt, especially when the applicant has not visited any other countries before.”

Richardson also said applicants were also rejected visas because of the kind of answers they give to test questions during interviews.

He said, “When a question, such as ‘do you have a relation in the US?’ Most often, they are quick to say ‘yes’, which of course, is in order. “Such an answer creates doubt that since the person has a relation, there is every tendency that the person may not want to come back. So visas can be rejected on that ground.” He said Nigerians were among the countries with highest number of visa rejections.

 The Chairman, ILAF, Titus Ajijola, said the seminar was designed to enhance the protection of migrant rights. He said, “Key strategies of the project are awareness raising, knowledge and skills improvement on the rules, as well as rights and obligations of migrants to encourage respect for the rights of migrants.” He said ILAF was designed to educate the general public on immigration matters.

NCC orders GSM firms in Nigeria to STOP Promos

The Nigerian Communications Commission has stopped promos and lotteries by GSM firms in the country, to address the poor quality of telecoms services.

 NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo, said in a statement on Monday that it had obtained credible information that the promos and lotteries were responsible for the poor quality of service. Affected by the ban are Globacom Ltd (operators of Glo Mobile), MTN, Intercellular Nigeria Plc, Visafone, Etisalat, Airtel and Multilinks.

The commission also stated that the firms were engaging in anti-competitive practices with their low tariffs.

 That on-net call was now being offered by Operators at tariffs well below the prevailing inter-connect rates thereby introducing anti-competitive practices and behaviour.

Access Bank employee shot by policemen laments over their unprofessionalism

An employee of Access Bank Plc, Mr. Femi Badejo, and his security guard, Joshua Moses, were shot by policemen in Lagos on Saturday after they responded to a distress call about a robbery at the banker’s home in Ikota area of the state.

The robbers had attacked Badejo and his neighbours around 4am and one of the neighbours made a distress call to the police, but by the time the policemen arrived about an hour later, the robbers had fled.

Badejo said he and his neighbours were in the compound discussing what had transpired when the policemen stormed the building and started shooting sporadically. He is currently receiving treatment at St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island. Badejo said, “I live in a one-storey building and there are four tenants occupying the ground floor. Around 4am, armed robbers stormed our house. “The robbers robbed all of us occupying the ground floor.

They stole my clothes, money, phones and other valuables. While the robbery was ongoing, one of the tenants called Maroko Police Division.” Badejo said after the robbers had fled, scores of policemen arrived at the house while one of them started shooting indiscriminately, adding that he was hit five times. He said, “We (neighbours) were all inside the compound counting our losses when we heard a bang on the gate. Immediately the security guard opened, one of the policemen started shooting indiscriminately. “The security guard was shot in the pelvis and in the back but the bullet pierced through his chest. I immediately took cover under a car but the policeman came to where I was and started shooting at me. “Another policeman came behind me and shot.

The first shot came through my feet and fractured my leg. Two shots grazed my thighs. Another shot went through my biceps and came out, while one went through my wrist. Badejo added that it took the intervention of the other neighbours as well as the Divisional Police Officer of the station to prevent him from being killed. Badejo and the injured guard were immediately rushed to the hospital. The guard was subsequently transferred to General Hospital, Broad Street, and then Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. He is said to be in a critical condition.

 One of our correspondents learnt that Badejo was scheduled to give a lecture at a summit organised by the bank on Saturday. According to a colleague who craved anonymity, the company executives were curious when he did not show up as scheduled. He said, “Badejo is in Total Quality Management Department at the head office. He is part of the team working on the 21st century transformation which the bank is working on.

He was supposed to deliver a lecture at 8.30am but when we did not see him, we began to wonder what went wrong. “It was not until later that we received words from one his relatives that he was shot by policemen.” Badejo, who berated the police for lack of professionalism, said, “When the policemen came into the compound, they didn’t even ask any questions.

 One of them just started shooting. Even the armed robbers did not even assault me, they only took my belongings.”
