Nigerian couple allowed to keep alleged stolen baby by UK High Court
The court’s ruling has created an uproar among charities, child and human rights groups who claim their story was a “charade” and might encourage trafficking. This is partly because of the manner in which the woman told the court she conceived and had a baby.
The couple who live in London but cannot be named for legal reasons failed to conceive a child despite undergoing IVF treatment in the UK.
BBC reports that they were said to be “desperate and distressed” after failed attempts to conceive and then travelled to Nigeria in 2010 where the woman began fertility treatment at a private clinic. She told the court that when she returned to the clinic months later, she was sedated.
When she regained consciousness she was handed a baby and told she had given birth. On her return to London, a GP raised concerns. The child was taken into care and a DNA test proved the child was not related to the couple. They then launched legal proceedings to get custody. But despite the fishy story about her conception and delivery, a High Court Judge, Mr Justice Coleridge said the pair were victims of the “most appalling scam“. He described them as “people of the highest calibre and of complete integrity” adding that he was ”deeply impressed by their humanity“.
On Thursday he awarded the parents custody of the child. This story sounds quite unbelievable. A woman claimed that she was tricked by a doctor into believing she had given birth while sedated and a Judge lets them go. She didn’t mention she was pregnant at any time, just sedated and then, here comes the baby. “When she regained consciousness she was handed a baby and told she had given birth.” Is this really possible? It seems like the couple just lied through their teeth to the judge and he decided to let them have custody of the child.
He probably thought it was in the best interest of the child for him or her to remain withe the couple, but I have to agree with the human rights groups that say it would encourage child trafficking. “He is in the custody of the (task force) and assisting in the investigation and has since made startling revelations.” In November 2011, Nigerian secret police said they had arrested an alleged Boko Haram spokesman with ties to Senator Aliyu Ndome.
The alleged links however appeared to involve local politics in Nigeria’s northeast. Nigerian authorities frequently exaggerate their efforts in arresting or cracking down on Boko Haram, which has carried out scores of bombings and shootings.
Violence linked to Boko Haram’s insurgency in northern and central Nigeria, including killings by security forces, is believed to have left more than 2,800 people dead since 2009.
Another Killing of more UNIPORT students in the host community
Also killed in the Thursday night incident were the student’s girlfriend and a young man who had just completed his national service in Port Harcourt.
There is uneasy calm in UNIPORT’s host communities, especially Omuokiri-Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State, over threats of reprisals by kinsmen of the four students who were lynched on October 5.
The three latest victims were shot at close range at about 10 pm on Thursday by unknown gunmen driving a sport utility vehicle (SUV). The names of the victims were unavailable at press time. It was learnt that the deceased persons had gone out for a drink to celebrate the passing out of the NYSC member , but on their way back rammed into a shop with their car.
It was gathered that the owner of the shop accosted the occupants of the car. An argument soon ensued between the two parties and in a matter of minutes, the gunmen arrived the scene and opened fire on the trio. They then zoomed off without taking anything from their victims. The Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the incident, but said he had no details.
The Deputy Registrar (Information) of the university, Dr. Williams Wodi, in a telephone interview yesterday said: “After the protest of October 8, UNIPORT was shut on October 9. I am not in a position to comment on students who ought to be in their parents’ homes. We are awaiting police reaction.” Meanwhile,Omuokiri-Aluu where four students of UNIPORT were murdered on October 5, is tensed following alleged threats by kinsmen of the murdered students to attack the community.
The victims, Biringa Chiadika Lordson (20), Year Two, Theatre Arts, U2010/1805036; Ugonna Kelechi Obuzor (18), Year Two, Geology, U2010/5565149; Mike Lloyd Toku (19), Year Two, Civil Engineering, U2010/3010094 and Tekena Erikena (20), a Certificate student in the Faculty of Education, were lynched for allegedly stealing mobile phones and laptops. Spokesman for the umbrella organisation of Aluu Clan, the Ogbakor Aluu, Mr. Garshon Benson, said the threats to attack Omuokiri-Aluu were real.
Benson urged security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities, with a view to preventing further destruction of lives and property. Two of the lynched students hailed from Okrika in Rivers State. The murder sparked a massive protest at Choba Junction on the East-West Road on October 9.

Nigerian embassy in Berlin attacked
According to police spokesman, unknown attackers threw glass bottles filled with a thick and sticky liquid at the front of the building in Neue Jakobstrabe, (The name of the street where the embassy is situated).
The spokesman said the police have handed over the investigation of the incident to state security authorities, adding that political motive may not be ruled out in the attack. The police said security workers noticed the damage to the building on Thursday morning.
The spokesman said that on Monday, 120 activists, members of the "Refugee Protest March in Berlin campaign" gathered in front of the Nigerian Embassy to demonstrate against the practice of deporting asylum seekers from Germany. According to him, 14 of the activists illegally entered to the embassy, in order to "occupy'' it as part of the protest march.
He explained that those who entered the premises were later ejected by security officials while 25 of the protesters were temporarily detained and later released. The spokesman stated that the demonstrators accused the embassy workers of "working closely with the German state to ensure that the processing of the largest number of deportations from Africa came from Nigeria''.
He emphasised that his agency would, however, investigate if there was a connection between the attempted occupation of the embassy on Monday and the recent paint attack on Wednesday night to the early hours of Thursday.

The trial of the Man Arrested with $7 Million Dollars at Lagos Airport
The suspect declared he was travelling with $4.5 million but when operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, screened him thoroughly, $7 million was found on him.
He was said to be on his way to Dubai, United Arab Emirates when he was arrested on 27 September, 2012. When he was interrogated, Sheriff reportedly confessed to EFCC operatives that he was hired by 20 people to ferry the money to Dubai.

She is one of the best and celebrated Nollywood diva. She is highly successful as an actress, but several attempts by the beautiful wife of pilot Mathew Ekeinde at music has been nothing to write home about, despite being an established celebrity.
She was one of the thespians that tried their luck in music in 2005 after they were banned by the then Ejike Asiegbu led AGN regime. In that year, she released a single entitled Gba, and was followed by a video and album. But despite the massive hype, the album was indeed a failure.

PHCN official electrocuted in Ado-Ekiti
An official of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Mr. Samuel Isaac, was yesterday electrocuted in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
Isaac was working on an electric cable at Satellite Junction on NTA Road when the incident occurred. Residents wept at the sight of the body, which was stuck on the high tension pole.
It was learnt that the deceased, who appeared to be middle-aged, was a graduate of Electrical/Electronics Engineering from the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke.
An eyewitness said a cable got detached while Isaac was working on a 33KVA high tension cable and it fell on him, killing him instantly. His charred remains were deposited at the mortuary of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.
Ekiti PHCN spokesman Mr. Kayode Brown said the victim and other PHCN staff were in the area to correct some faults that had caused power outage. Brown said he was shocked by the incident because the late Isaac was experienced in the job and had been working with the company since for years.
He said: “We have to get to the root of this matter because back-feeding cases are very rare while working on high tension cables.
Nobody uses generator that could warrant such situation, so we are at a loss about the cause of his death.”
Ado-Ekiti Local Government Chairman Sunday Ibitoye, who was one of the early callers at the scene of the incident, described the situation as unfortunate.

My own respect is not just fraternal, but somewhat avuncular as well. You have been championing the business of entertainment with phenomenal contributions as veteran producers and all-encompassing showbiz personalities. Thus it wouldn’t be out of place if something like a knock descends from on high, directly from the ancestors and lands on the head of any of us, your very junior colleagues for disrespecting the colossuses in the entertainment industry.
As a standup comedian I have come to discover that various sectors of the global entertainment industry are systematically tied together like a bunch of firewood. It is practically the case of a healthy rapport of mutual promotion. It is what has enhanced the meteoric upswing of the Nigerian entertainment industry. The story of the comedy industry, which I happen to be part of, is equally making headlines. And yet, not without some mutations in line with the spirit of our time. As a matter of fact, dynamism and creativity are attributes of the entertainment industry. Hence, the comedian has transcended the era of tortoise-squirrel tales, rooster-and-bull story, narrative rambles, and redundant fart jokes. Comedy has beautifully developed into social commentary, what the public can exhilaratingly identify with without ado. Regrettably, the content of comedy in most cases has shifted from just anybody to celebrities. Today, the big enchiladas and the Mr Somebody have come to have a place in the comic chat. And it is simply a waste of time and words querying why it is so. Therefore, it doesn’t sound bizarre to anybody anymore that the American president has been the focal point of many American comedians. While alive, Mark Twain and George Carlin never spared the American government. But the government spared them, digested the humour in what they were saying and left them in their clownish babbles. Actually comedians and clowns are brothers – nobody takes them seriously even though they habitually provoke serious laughter. Nevertheless, no comedic license to insult folks is intended.
Obviously, it is not just about the American president. With due respect, it must be stated that other highly influential parsonages across the globe are involved. More still, Her Majesty, the Queen and His Holiness, the Pope are not excluded from the humorous drama. What do they do? They only smile and overlook the facile act of the jester, or at best call on him to put more smiles on people’s faces. We are indeed in a world of humour. Coming home, if OBJ had paid any serious attention to the flimsy rants of comedians about him, for sure, the king of comedy Alibaba and some of my colleagues would by now be staggering with castrated tongues or even conduced to the fate of extinct dinosaurs. To him we all pay homage for his paternal encouragement to the industry, but more for providing inexhaustible materials for our business to thrive. In the same vein, Tuface Idibia, Wande Coal, Dele Momodu, Weird MC, Segun Arinze, Chris Okotie, Don Jazzy, Banky W, Tonto Dikeh, D’Banj, Omobaba, Alibaba, the Jonathans and others deserves constant applause as well for having not drawn the sword of enmity against me and my colleagues. I am very sure that who ever is reading this piece can relate the above mentioned names to numerous jokes done by comedians. The truth of the matter is that only those revered by society enter into the contemporary comical repertoire. Please may all VIP’s note this down.
In other to flee parochialism in this slim letter, let me quickly draw our attention to a relevant point from one of the fathers of African literature. Achebe writes: ‘Some years ago at an international writers’ meeting in Sweden, a Swedish writer and journalist said to a small group of us Africans present: “You fellows are lucky. Your governments put you in prison. Here in Sweden nobody pays any attention to us no matter what we write.” We apologized profusely to him for his misfortune and our undeserved luck!’ (Chinua Achebe, The Education of a British-Protected Child, London, Penguin, 2011, p. 121) If it were like this for intellectuals like Swedish writers and journalists, how would it be for the lame Swedish comedians? Definitely worse! It must be noted that this manner of apathy towards comedians is replicated across the civilized world. I guess the point should have been clear by now.

That joke was only a spontaneous exaggeration by a comedian who needed to just lie to the world and make a living from it.The naivety and clumsiness in attacking you aside, you and I know very well that any attack on you by any comedian is as pointless as a wild-goose chase.
However, my sincere apologies if I exaggerated in my jokes. Please no harm was intended. It was rather a confirmation of your significance to society. The several great artistes you created will witness better to this than my little self. Again, by ‘agelessness’ I intended the lasting glamour of your presence in the entertainment industry, and the future and perpetuity you stand for in the music enterprise. 3 recount what transpired that day -Aluu4
The Nigeria Police Force has also dismissed the policeman who was part of the mob that killed the students. The policeman has been identified as Lucky Orji.
David Ugbaje's recount
“Around 7 am, I left my house. I dressed up to go to work. On my street, I saw a crowd of people with four unclad boys, who were being led into my compound, No. 9, Royal Villa in Omuokiri-Aluu. I said what was the problem and they said the boys were armed robbers.
I said that is my compound, let us go and see the person, if he is their member or let them point the particular person, who is their member they were going to look for”.
“I opened the gate, they entered. A crowd of people that I could not control. They entered the compound. They pointed to the room of one of our co-tenants, whose name is Bright. They said one of the boys was staying with Bright. When they got there, Bright’s door was locked. Some people wanted to break the door.
They started beating the boys. Very serious. Along the line, two policemen came around. One of the policemen was pleading. The other policeman joined in beating the boys and later said the crowd should hand over the boys to them, but the crowd said ‘no’. ‘We no go gree, we no go gree’.
“As the policemen were leaving, they said whatever this thing was going to bring, you would bear the result. Since I live in the yard, I said if I stayed there and the people were killed, automatically, the house would be in trouble. We are now in trouble. I brought out my belt; I started flogging people and asked them to leave the yard. I was beating the people (crowd) very seriously”.
“One Ikwerre man in the crowd asked why I was beating the crowd for the boys to be moved from our yard. I continued to beat the crowd to carry the boys to where they brought them from. I drove them out of our compound and gate. They injured me in my hand, when I was trying to open the gate”. “I started flogging for them to leave. There is water in our (house’s) frontage. They went there and soaked the boys (four) inside the water. I discovered that one of the boys was my customer on campus, at the University of Port Harcourt, where I work. He was an Igbo student. I asked the boy: are you a student? “If you watch the video, you will see me where I held a belt, asking the boy.
The boy told me ‘no’, that he was not a student (of UNIPORT). Quite all right, I knew him very well. He once bought slippers from me and used to repair slippers from me. I am a shoemaker at UNIPORT”. Maybe the boy was afraid to tell me he was a student. There was nothing I could do because of the crowd. If I talked more than that, they could join me with them. “The beating was going on, here and there. At the end, they finally moved the boys out of my street. I then went out. My wife has just been delivered of a baby.” On his role in the lynching of the four students, Ugbaje said: “I flogged the boys twice.”
Amadi's account of what happened
“I live at No. 9. Royal Villa in Omuokiri-Aluu. I am from Ikwerre. I work at UNIPORT. I am a printer. I do photocopying and binding. In the morning on that day, I dressed up, as usual, so that I could go to my work. When I came out at the junction, so that I could pick a bike, I saw a crowd of people, with four boys. They were unclad, with tyres on their necks”.
“I shifted a bit, but to verify what was happening, they told me the four boys came to rob. I asked where they were taking them to. They said they were taking them to No. 9, where I live”. They said they mentioned one of our neighbours. That they came to look for him as well. “I followed the crowd. Before I reached my estate, they had already reached the house with the four boys in front of my neighbour, Bright, from Ogoni. They said they were looking for one of the boys. Before they came, the back door was locked. Some of the people in the crowd said they were going to break the back door. Others said no, they should leave the door, since Bright was not around. At the end, they started beating the boys”. “They started beating the boys. In the process of beating the boys, policemen came, but they said no, they were not going to leave the four boys. I called this my neighbour (David Chinasa Ugbaje), with other neighbours, that we were not going to allow that kind of thing to take place in our estate that we would be in trouble.
“This my neighbour (Ugbaje) collected his belt. I collected a small stick, and we started chasing people, flogging everybody, to take the boys out of our yard. We started pushing everybody out, including the four students. They left their tyres, I said they should take their tyres out of the yard and we locked our gate. “I flogged everybody, including the four boys, for everybody to go out. I beat one of the four boys twice and the other one, I beat once.

“My name is Segun Lawal. I am from Osun State. I live in Omuokiri-Aluu. I was in the house, around 6:30 am to 7 am. I am a taxi driver. I saw a crowd and I parked my car outside. I saw a police vehicle coming and I followed the police. I saw four policemen. I saw the policemen enter the gate”. “As I reached the gate, they were beating the boys.
I had to raise my hands up, to defend the boys. If you watch the video, you will see it. I wore blue polo shirt. I started pleading for the crowd not to kill the four boys. They did not listen”. “The Policemen left immediately. I had to leave. As I left, I went to GRA (Port Harcourt); one of my customers called that I should take him to Obudu Cattle Ranch (in Cross River State).
“I came back on Saturday night (October 6). I was in my house. Policemen came to arrest me. I never had this type of experience. I told the police that I was not around. That I traveled to Obudu. I did not beat the four boys.”

I have restrained myself for a couple
of years from commenting on Tonto Dike's career after my last comments about
her role in the soft porn movie she acted in two years back, were badly taken
by her and she went on twitter to hurl infantile insults on my person with
expletives and uncomplimentary remarks.
My reaction to such then was just a
dignified silence. After all, I had already spoken on her stunted talent as an
up and coming actress and further comments on her incensed tweets were
unnecessary.
All through the past few hours, the social media networks have been abuzz with the new singles of actress, Tonto Dike. She seems to have joined the actors of her ilk who have the moonlighting itch to delve into singing. While no one can stop such an ambition by those artistes, I do think those who surround such artistes are their worst enemies if they can't tell them the truth about leaving their sometimes doubtful day job.
Well, I will! I listened to Miss Dike's two singles a few minutes ago and my initial speechlessness morphed to a nagging laughter and then subsided into a befuddled anguish. I'm a music label owner (November Records) and have produced and Executive Produced acts like Majek Fashek, Terry tha Rapman, Zubby Enebeli etc. I know much about music and the slant of commercial music. But after listening to Miss Dike's songs, I'm inclined to align with the majorly negative comments about them on cyberspace. Ah-ah! Whoever produced her knew she has a bad voice for singing and masked our listening torture with the Autotune effect.

Maid Boils Employers 3 Month Old Baby To Death Because Salary Was Not Paid
The maid, Nokuthula Nyathi, of Emakhandeni is alleged to have boiled the infant in a container on Wednesday last week. The infant's mother, Karen Dube, collapsed when she saw her baby in the container.
The maid was arrested a day after the gruesome murder and appeared before Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Richard Ramaboea facing murder charges. She was remanded in custody to 23 October. Some residents said the maid and her employer had a turbulent relationship.
It is understood that the maid usually gets paid on the first day of every month but at the time of the murder, the woman's salary was overdue by two days. "I do not think that money was the reason for all this. Dube did not trust her because she has caught the maid stealing her belongings on several occasions. The employer tried to fire her but the maid resisted.
So I think that might be the major reason behind the cruel deed," said the source. It is reported that on the day in question, Nyathi asked Dube to give her her salary. The employer said she did not have the money and promised to get it by the end of the week and left for work thereafter. Nyathi, however, appeared not to have believed her employer's promise. She is alleged to have taken the three-month old baby and put it in a container and boiled the infant on a stove.
The maid then took her belongings and left. On her return in the evening, Dube found her baby still in the container and was so shocked that she fell unconscious. The woman was discovered by a neighbour lying on the floor. An ambulance was called to the scene while the body of the infant was taken to a mortuary
