Austrian Man makes Record-Breaking Jump from SPACE to Planet EARTH

Austrian, Felix Baumgartner jumped from the edge of space Sunday, freefalling for several minutes before opening his parachute, descending and landing safely back on Earth.

It was not immediately clear if the 43-year-old succeeded in breaking the sound barrier with the fastest freefall ever as he plummeted from an altitude of more than 24 miles (39 kilometers) and fell for over five minutes.

Television pictures showed him opening his parachute at about 5,000 feet and guiding himself back toward ground. Baumgartner had taken more than two hours to get up to the jump altitude.

He had already broken one record, before he even leapt: the previous highest altitude for a manned balloon flight was 113,740 feet, set in 1961.

Planes prevented from landing at the Abuja Airport due to V.I.P, Presidential movement and poor weather

For over three hours on Saturday evening, planes were prevented from landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Abuja due to ‘Very Important Persons’ movement and bad weather.

Our correspondent gathered that flights that were to land at the airport between 4pm and 7pm were forced to divert to adjoining airports, while others chose to return to where they came from.

An Aero flight AJ 127 which left Lagos at about 3pm was forced to return to Lagos after hovering in the air at the Abuja airport for over 45 minutes due to presidential movement and poor weather. The plane landed back at Lagos airport around 5:30pm. However, the flight later departed for Abuja again at about 7pm and landed safely in Abuja airport at about 7.50pm.

Aero later said, “There was VIP movement and bad weather. The flight later returned to Abuja with passengers.” Spokesman for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Mr. Supo Atobatele, could not be reached for comments. Calls made to his telephone lines did not go through.

EFCC traces N1bn property to former Bayelsa gov

A competent source in the commission told Saturday Vanguard last night that the property which worth over N1 billion were traced to companies owned by Sylva.

The source said that the property, which are located in choice areas of Abuja, were discovered in the ongoing investigation into how Sylva looted Bayelsa during his tenure as the governor of the state.

The source added that the anti- graft agency had also uncovered a network of fronts through which the former governor acquired choice property in major cities especially Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

One of the properties linked to the former governor is a duplex valued at N310m situated at Cachez Estate, Mpape, Abuja while the other is a mansion valued at N700m located off Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent in high brow Wuse 2, Abuja. The Wuse mansion was acquired in the name of Marlin Maritime Limited, a company owned by Timipre Sylva.

The managing Director of the Company, Gbenga Balogun, is said to have fled as EFCC operatives closed in on him in the course of investigation of the Sylva era in Bayelsa, during which billions of naira is said to have been looted by him and his officials. In spite of the escapee of the fronts, the operatives of the commission are reported to be working round the clock to arrest the culprits and bring them to account for the public funds. Several accounts have already been traced to the front (name withheld) who allegedly opened many of them in his name using different passport photographs.

The front, (name withheld) is currently on the run. Meanwhile, Sylva is already standing trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja on a six-count charge bordering on fraud and money laundering. But in a swift reaction, the spokesman for Timipre Sylva, Mr. Ola Doife, challenged EFCC to stop trying the former governor in the media but to collate any evidence at its disposal and present it in court since the matter was already pending.

Doife maintained that Sylva remained innocent of the charges until proved otherwise by a competent court of jurisdiction in the land.

Stephanie Okereke-Linus openly condemned Aluu killings of the four students

Why do we permit jungle justice? Do we feel helpless with the system thus take justice into our own hands? What are our fears? What would ever justify the actions of a community that stole the lives of students who lived amongst them – lives that only God can give?

We may never know the truth of what really led to the killings at Aluu – that truth died with the four of them. All we can ask is for justice. That is the only way the tears of the mothers of these young lives may dry. It is the only way we all can feel safe because no matter the situation, lives should not be snatched so brutally. This is a society with laws.

As we seek for what is right, let death not procure more deaths. We do not need to burn down Aluu community. We do not need to shed more blood. Not every child, mother and father in the community killed or endorsed the killing of the young men. They too deserve to be protected from the brutality that has ensued from all of this. Life is a beautiful thing; do not steal another’s opportunity to experience it. May their deaths not be in vain.

I just extracted the most part that caught my eyes.

Police shoot sales girl dead, injure 3 others

A 20-year old sales girl identified simply as Lucy, was on Friday shot dead by policemen in the Apo area of Abuja.

The girl was hit in the chest by bullets fired into a photography shop where she worked as a sales girl.
Three other people sustained gunshot injuries when policemen from the FCT Police Command fired bullets indiscriminately in an attempt to enforce the demolition order of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council.

The policemen had stormed the area around 7 am with officials of Development Control Department, who had come to demolish illegal structures.

But residents and indigenes, who felt that the government had no right to demolish their houses when they were yet to be resettled, resisted the operation. They claimed that the case was still in court and that their leaders had advised them to continue to live in the area pending the determination of the suit. As the policemen shot indiscriminately to control the residents, bullets penetrated into one of the shops and Lucy was hit in the chest. She was rushed to Garki Hospital, but she was confirmed dead on arrival.

Her body has been deposited in the mortuary. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu, met the House of Representatives representing AMAC/Bwari constituency of the FCT, Zephaniah Jisalo, at the hospital when he visited. Inalegwu, who was in tears, assured the lawmaker that the case would be investigated. “We are not sure what took our men there or what led to the shooting, it’s still a matter for investigation,” he said.

Emeka Ani, owner of the photo shop, where the deceased worked, said that his sales boy also sustained gunshot injuries during the incident. He said, “From morning, the police surrounded our area. They said they came for demolition. All of a sudden, they started shooting sporadically.

They shot into my shop and killed my sales girl. My boy also sustained injuries. Lucy has been with me for about one month. Her sister brought her for me from Cross River.” The National Coordinator, Greater Gbyagi Initiative, Mr. Gimba Baiza, described the incident as wicked.

D’banj has something to tell you

In a major interview:

D’banj said, “I don’t know anything about the Illuminati. When I wanted to travel out of Nigeria for the first time, I collected my international passport from Bishop David Oyedepo. That shows that I owe my success to God. If my success is too fast for people or they cannot understand it, please don’t attribute it to illuminati. I feel very offended when that is being said, because it simply translates to giving God’s glory to another person which He does not share with anyone. God will strike anyone who attributes my success to someone else.”

Thugs attack Teachers, Vice Principal for flogging the Grand-Daughter of the Oba of benin

There was tension at the Federal Government Girls’ Secondary School in Benin City, Edo State, southsouth Nigeria when teachers of the school were attacked by thugs who were allegedly on a mission to avenge the beating of a girl said to be the grand daughter of Oba of Benin by a teacher in the school.
The student said to be a granddaughter of the Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa, was alleged to have been injured on the hand while being flogged by the teacher.

It was gathered that the suspected hoodlums invaded the school premises on Monday and started beating up some teachers over alleged flogging of the student.

It was said that the thugs who were allegedly led by Tony forced the way into the school compound and demanded that the teacher who flogged the Oba’s grand daughter be produced and when this was not done, they attacked the teachers including one of the vice-principals. State Chairman of TUC, Comrade Joe Aligbe who confirmed the invasion by the thugs, said they were armed and threatened to return if the teacher was not produced.

“Our members are now afraid. We are here to appeal to them for calm. The principal is not aware. I know the Benin monarch will not approve of this action,” he said. The Vice Principal, Special Duties, Mr. Ihiridan Harga, said the school’s management team are new and were not aware of the flogging of a Benin Princess, adding “the alleged offence was committed before we resumed here.

We were not aware of the flogging. The intruders were many and they were led by two chiefs.

Policemen said they should burn my brother alive" - Tekena’s sister

Miss Ibisobia Elkanah, elder sister of Tekena Friday Elkanah, revealed yesterday that policemen visited the scene where the students were burnt to death after they were severely injured and that one of the law enforcement agents told the perpetrators of the dastardly act “to burn them alive”

The murdered students, Chiadika Lordson, Ugonna Kelechi Obusor, Mike Lloyd Toku, and Tekena Elkanah, all part two students, were murdered in cold blood over alleged theft of a laptop computer and a blackberry phone. Ibisobia, a part-time final year student of Marketing, at the same university who witnessed the incident, said on that fateful day, at about 7.30 am, she was at the house of her girl friend in the community when she heard people shouting outside. “I dashed out and beckoned on my friend to come since she lived in the area.

The thing attracted much noise and attention. I went there but did not actually see or recognize any of them, due to the crowd. “I heard when people were saying the people they (vigilance group) caught were strangers; that they want to burn them.

They said they were asking them questions, so that they could know their senders.” She said after that, she went back to her friend’s house, but could not stay there. “I went back again. I went through the bush path so that I could see them properly. I started jumping to see if I could see them. I jumped again but saw nothing. I jumped the second time and I saw Tekena. Tekena happened to be my brother. “I told myself that I was not seeing well, this thing is a lie. I jumped the third time, I saw Lloyd (one of the victims). So, I started shouting. From what I gathered, the first time I came, they said they were not known; that they were strangers.

As I identified them, I started shouting. Ibisobia said she continued shouting that Tekena was her brother, saying that he came to her on Thursday in school and she gave him his school fees. “I told them that somebody should allow me to ask him what happened and what he came to do. He would confide in me. He was wailing and in a pool of blood.” “Tekena has been my younger brother for many years. I saw them as they lay in the water naked with leaves covering their nakedness.” His elder sister said she struggled and entered the crowd. Somebody shouted “Who is that? What is she doing inside?” “People were pushing me and I started crying.

He is my brother! He is not a thief! Somebody behind me said O’girl run for your life. About two persons turned and asked, are you sure he is your brother, and said may be I was the person that sent him to go and steal.” Ibisobia replied them that how could she send him, that she did not look as such. ‘They said I should run for my life that I would be the next one, fifth person.” The young lady lamented that before she could get to her friend’s room to call her family members, she learnt that the mob had taken them to the burrow pit. “So, I went there again. I called my family and they started coming.

The police van came, went into the mob and they were talking to them (youths). The people kept quiet as police were making statements. “I heard them laughing. You know, they were happy. They kept quiet again. Police talked and they laughed again. The next was for me to see three policemen coming out of the mob, boarded their van. And, one of the said “burn them alive”.

“I must confess, I was gripped with fear. I had the intention to talk to the man that said they should be burnt alive. As soon as they (police) drove off, I saw the flames. I was thinking they burnt them after they had killed them.

Later, I discovered that they were burnt while they were alive.
