Police shoot sales girl dead, injure 3 others

A 20-year old sales girl identified simply as Lucy, was on Friday shot dead by policemen in the Apo area of Abuja.

The girl was hit in the chest by bullets fired into a photography shop where she worked as a sales girl.
Three other people sustained gunshot injuries when policemen from the FCT Police Command fired bullets indiscriminately in an attempt to enforce the demolition order of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council.

The policemen had stormed the area around 7 am with officials of Development Control Department, who had come to demolish illegal structures.

But residents and indigenes, who felt that the government had no right to demolish their houses when they were yet to be resettled, resisted the operation. They claimed that the case was still in court and that their leaders had advised them to continue to live in the area pending the determination of the suit. As the policemen shot indiscriminately to control the residents, bullets penetrated into one of the shops and Lucy was hit in the chest. She was rushed to Garki Hospital, but she was confirmed dead on arrival.

Her body has been deposited in the mortuary. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu, met the House of Representatives representing AMAC/Bwari constituency of the FCT, Zephaniah Jisalo, at the hospital when he visited. Inalegwu, who was in tears, assured the lawmaker that the case would be investigated. “We are not sure what took our men there or what led to the shooting, it’s still a matter for investigation,” he said.

Emeka Ani, owner of the photo shop, where the deceased worked, said that his sales boy also sustained gunshot injuries during the incident. He said, “From morning, the police surrounded our area. They said they came for demolition. All of a sudden, they started shooting sporadically.

They shot into my shop and killed my sales girl. My boy also sustained injuries. Lucy has been with me for about one month. Her sister brought her for me from Cross River.” The National Coordinator, Greater Gbyagi Initiative, Mr. Gimba Baiza, described the incident as wicked.

D’banj has something to tell you

In a major interview:

D’banj said, “I don’t know anything about the Illuminati. When I wanted to travel out of Nigeria for the first time, I collected my international passport from Bishop David Oyedepo. That shows that I owe my success to God. If my success is too fast for people or they cannot understand it, please don’t attribute it to illuminati. I feel very offended when that is being said, because it simply translates to giving God’s glory to another person which He does not share with anyone. God will strike anyone who attributes my success to someone else.”

Thugs attack Teachers, Vice Principal for flogging the Grand-Daughter of the Oba of benin

There was tension at the Federal Government Girls’ Secondary School in Benin City, Edo State, southsouth Nigeria when teachers of the school were attacked by thugs who were allegedly on a mission to avenge the beating of a girl said to be the grand daughter of Oba of Benin by a teacher in the school.
The student said to be a granddaughter of the Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa, was alleged to have been injured on the hand while being flogged by the teacher.

It was gathered that the suspected hoodlums invaded the school premises on Monday and started beating up some teachers over alleged flogging of the student.

It was said that the thugs who were allegedly led by Tony forced the way into the school compound and demanded that the teacher who flogged the Oba’s grand daughter be produced and when this was not done, they attacked the teachers including one of the vice-principals. State Chairman of TUC, Comrade Joe Aligbe who confirmed the invasion by the thugs, said they were armed and threatened to return if the teacher was not produced.

“Our members are now afraid. We are here to appeal to them for calm. The principal is not aware. I know the Benin monarch will not approve of this action,” he said. The Vice Principal, Special Duties, Mr. Ihiridan Harga, said the school’s management team are new and were not aware of the flogging of a Benin Princess, adding “the alleged offence was committed before we resumed here.

We were not aware of the flogging. The intruders were many and they were led by two chiefs.

Policemen said they should burn my brother alive" - Tekena’s sister

Miss Ibisobia Elkanah, elder sister of Tekena Friday Elkanah, revealed yesterday that policemen visited the scene where the students were burnt to death after they were severely injured and that one of the law enforcement agents told the perpetrators of the dastardly act “to burn them alive”

The murdered students, Chiadika Lordson, Ugonna Kelechi Obusor, Mike Lloyd Toku, and Tekena Elkanah, all part two students, were murdered in cold blood over alleged theft of a laptop computer and a blackberry phone. Ibisobia, a part-time final year student of Marketing, at the same university who witnessed the incident, said on that fateful day, at about 7.30 am, she was at the house of her girl friend in the community when she heard people shouting outside. “I dashed out and beckoned on my friend to come since she lived in the area.

The thing attracted much noise and attention. I went there but did not actually see or recognize any of them, due to the crowd. “I heard when people were saying the people they (vigilance group) caught were strangers; that they want to burn them.

They said they were asking them questions, so that they could know their senders.” She said after that, she went back to her friend’s house, but could not stay there. “I went back again. I went through the bush path so that I could see them properly. I started jumping to see if I could see them. I jumped again but saw nothing. I jumped the second time and I saw Tekena. Tekena happened to be my brother. “I told myself that I was not seeing well, this thing is a lie. I jumped the third time, I saw Lloyd (one of the victims). So, I started shouting. From what I gathered, the first time I came, they said they were not known; that they were strangers.

As I identified them, I started shouting. Ibisobia said she continued shouting that Tekena was her brother, saying that he came to her on Thursday in school and she gave him his school fees. “I told them that somebody should allow me to ask him what happened and what he came to do. He would confide in me. He was wailing and in a pool of blood.” “Tekena has been my younger brother for many years. I saw them as they lay in the water naked with leaves covering their nakedness.” His elder sister said she struggled and entered the crowd. Somebody shouted “Who is that? What is she doing inside?” “People were pushing me and I started crying.

He is my brother! He is not a thief! Somebody behind me said O’girl run for your life. About two persons turned and asked, are you sure he is your brother, and said may be I was the person that sent him to go and steal.” Ibisobia replied them that how could she send him, that she did not look as such. ‘They said I should run for my life that I would be the next one, fifth person.” The young lady lamented that before she could get to her friend’s room to call her family members, she learnt that the mob had taken them to the burrow pit. “So, I went there again. I called my family and they started coming.

The police van came, went into the mob and they were talking to them (youths). The people kept quiet as police were making statements. “I heard them laughing. You know, they were happy. They kept quiet again. Police talked and they laughed again. The next was for me to see three policemen coming out of the mob, boarded their van. And, one of the said “burn them alive”.

“I must confess, I was gripped with fear. I had the intention to talk to the man that said they should be burnt alive. As soon as they (police) drove off, I saw the flames. I was thinking they burnt them after they had killed them.

Later, I discovered that they were burnt while they were alive.

Keystone Bank’s MD resigns

THE Managing Director of Keystone Bank, Mr Oti Ikomi has resigned. The bank said his exit yesterday, was based on personal reasons.

In a four-paragraph statement, the bank explained that Ikomi, a seasoned professional banker with a wealth of experience spanning over two decades, was appointed chief executive officer of the bank in August 2011, adding that the Chairman of Keystone Bank, Moyo Ajekigbe, has convened a meeting for today, to review the development and appoint a successor.

The Managing Director of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), owners of the bank, Mr Mustafa Chike-Obi, when contacted, said the decision as to who and when a successor would be named, rests squarely with the Board of Directors of the bank.

He told The Reporters that the bank has a competent board to decide and appoint a successor to Mr Ikomi, saying it would be in appropriate for him to offer further comments when he has not been briefed by the board. He said: “In a week or two after hearing from the Board, I should be able to comment,” adding, “it will be inappropriate for me to comment at this moment.

Although no member of staff was willing to offer any explanation as to the turn of events, a source who asked that his identity be veiled, said the development is a fallout of internal boardroom squabbles.

Eight year daughters married off

What a world we live in, these are some of the eight year old brides married to men who are old enough to be their fathers. So when did these brides had the time to enjoy being children as they were forced to become adult at that tender age?

Baby returned to mother after another woman cuts her womb with razor blade to steal the child.

                                                                          Daiana dos Santos
Santos, earlier on September 27 doctors told her that she wasn't pregnant but that her bump was actually a myoma, she became hysterical, wanting to get a child any way she could.

She was terrified that her husband would leave her when he finds out that she wasn't pregnant, as she had believed.
She met her victim Brazilian Odete Barreto, 22, who was 37 weeks pregnant at the same health clinic where she had been given the bad news, and convinced her to come back with her to her house.

Daiana dos Santos, 21, invited her to her house telling her she had baby clothes to give away, inside Santos knocked her out by hitting her over the head with a wooden plank, before using a razor blade to cut open her belly before removing the baby.

Leaving the mother to die, as she took the baby into the street, claiming the child was hers. Shocked neighbours ran inside and found Mrs Barreto in a pool of blood. She and the baby were rushed to hospital and both stayed 15 days in intensive care in Manaus, northern Brazil.

Ms Barreto saw her baby for the first time on Wednesday, when both were released from hospital. Santos is in isolation in Manaus' Anisio Jobin women's prison charged with attempted murder.

Lagos Ranked among 25 most innovative cities in the world

Some Lagos residents have taken this generous assessment of the city by ULI with a pinch of salt.
Lagos is notorious for heavy traffics. Residents can spend up to six hours in traffic during rush hour.

This they blame on decaying road network and congestion. The government has embarked on road rehabilitation in recent years, but with the absence of a viable mass transit plan, their efforts have been inadequate.

Though it is the country's financial hub, Lagos suffers from mass unemployment, insecurity, poor infrastructure, and so on.

In April, The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the city as the third worst/least liveable city in the world in its Global Liveability Survey.

Despite being weighed down by decaying and inadequate infrastructure, Lagos State has made the shortlist of the 25 most innovative cities in the world. Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, made the final cut from an initial pool of 75 cities.

The search to pick the world's most innovative city in 2012 is organised by Urban Land Institute (ULI), an authoritative and widely quoted source of objective information on urban planning, growth, and development in the world. The competition is sponsored by Citi Group, with media support from the Wall Street Journal.

According to ULI, despite the global financial crisis, each shortlisted city has "maintained innovative mindset, and the capacity to adapt and re-imagine itself." It's Fashola's performance A statement from the organisers indicates that the effort of the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, and is team, is the main reason for the state's positive rating. "These 25 cities have stepped up to the challenge - the scale and scope of avenues they have pursued since 2008 exhibit a sustained and growing commitment to development," ULI said. Mr. Fashola has been the state governor since May 2007.

The institute stated that the shortlisted cities have provided "new avenues, whether in structure, scope or timing, reflect remarkable, forward-thinking decisions on the part of municipal leadership." City of Potentials Lagos made the cut due to what the organisation described as the city's economic potential, progress and investment climate. ULI described Lagos as one of the "Big 5" cities in Africa and projected the city to soon over take Johannesburg as the continent's business hub.

"The city is Nigeria's 'gate to the sea' accounting for 80 per cent of national seaport activity. Lagos GDP is $33 billion (N5 trillion) and accounts for roughly 25 per cent of Nigeria's overall GDP." With 18 million inhabitants, Lagos is the most populated of the 25 cities.

The only other African city that made the cut is Cape Town in South Africa. Other cities on the list are London (UK), Shenzhen (China), Medelin (Colombia), Copenhagen (Denmark), Raleigh-Durham (USA), Toronto (Canada), Melbourne (Australia), Bratislavia (Slovakia), Hong Kong, San-Francisco (USA), Chicago (USA) and Berlin (Germany).

Completing the list are New York, Shanghai (China), Hamburg (Germany), Atlanta (USA), Tel Aviv (Israel), Boston (USA), Vancouver (Canada), Seattle (USA), Vienna (Austria), Sao Paulo (Brazil) and Singapore.

ULI will announce the final shortlist of three on October 25 while the winning city will be announced January 24, 2013.

A bride cancels wedding over a new car

A 40-year-old-man, Mohammed Abubakar of Hayin Rigasa on Thursday, brought his bride-to-be, Umulkair Ja’afar, before a Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, for alleged assault and intimidation.

He told the court that arrangement for the wedding had gone far, when Umulkair told him that he must buy her a car before the ceremony could hold.

He said: “We have started making arrangement of getting married, but she requested that I must buy a car for her before she will marry me. “I told her that I don’t have the money because I just bought my new car.” Abubakar further told the court that his inability to buy a car for Umulkair ended the wedding arrangement.

He told the court: “After this development, the woman started sending insulting and intimidating text messages to me.” He said he had witnesses, who would testify on the issue. “I have shown them the messages she has been sending to me. I want to bring them before the court to testify,” he added.

The Presiding Officer, Ibrahim Inuwa, adjourned the case to October 18, for the continuation of hearing.

Gone so soon-RIP Aluu4

Don't know if you got this, but it was sent to my blackberry message,I thought I shared it with you.

Goodnight Pain. "thieves, thieves" he screamed, it was almost funny. Not until more voices joined the chorus as they screamed and shouted on us. We cud av ran at least to save our lives, but our intentions were genuine and little did we know how the day would end. From a handful of young men shouting and throwing questions at us, it escalated to a crowd of angry mob. There was no way we could escape this one, so we calmed down. They pushed us around and then stripped us all.

These men pulled us pants down, we were more than embarrassed, the whole community watched, I recognized few faces from the crowd. Obviously they were so afraid to say "stop" then the beating started, I wished it to be just a nightmare. But it was real, these men were determined. They dropped heavy rocks on our heads, they pounded our faces wit large planks, blood covered our eyes, they matched and kicked us right on our bleeding nostrils, we couldn't breathe. "Bring tire" one of the men repeated, until they brought the tires. "Oh God!" We watched the crowd watch us, we raised hands of plea, we couldn't speak, Some hid, some shot videos and took pictures. there was no one to stop this.

This was the point we knew it was over. We felt pain, helpless and hopeless. I thought of my siblings, i wondered how my mum would take this. She would fall apart. I begged God to hold her for me, comfort and make her strong for me, I prayed same for my friends. Then we started crying, we cried together. the tears gave us headaches. We looked up high, the sky was still. Rings of tires landed on our necks, they kept hitting us, but we were numb already. They set us ablaze. We rolled around, tried to reach for each other, I wondered who would give up first, the fire burned our bodies. it hurt, it hurt and then it hurt. But suddenly the pain stopped, Then I couldn't hear any other thing, but silence. I thanked God. the pain was over and Gods glory was revealed.

Goodnight pain. RIP ALUU#4.

Pregnant woman swallows toothbrush

A four-month pregnant woman swallowed a toothbrush while using it to scratch an itch at the back of her throat, an Israeli hospital spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Because of her condition, doctors at the Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot, south of Tel Aviv, were initially unable to X-Ray her to determine where the 25-centimetre-long toothbrush was lying.
