Kidnappers paraded for killing Lagos Businessman

                                                       Suspects
                                                                Victim
Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Manko, who paraded the suspects told anxious journalists that the eight suspects, including a woman, were behind series of kidnap incidents both in Lagos and the neighbouring states.

He said the suspects who used an uncompleted building located somewhere in Okota, Lagos, as their hideout were in the habit of trailing their victim(s) to an obscure place, abduct, blindfold and drive them to their hideout in Okota from where they demand for ransom.

The police boss who linked the kidnapers to the abduction and murder of Odidi Nweze, however, absolved the Oxpharm Specialties Ltd, Satellite Town, the pharmaceutical store where it was reported that the deceased was kidnapped before his subsequent murder.

A visibly elated Manko tongue-lashed critics of the command saying, “Those who are in the habit of criticizing the police can now see that we are not sleeping. We are not saying don’t criticise, but it should be objective.

It is my determination that we will never rest on our oars until peace returns to the state.” He added: “I am happy to announce to you that we have been able to smash a syndicate of kidnappers who have been linked to series of kidnap incidents in the state. They are about eight of them including a woman. The ring leader has been arrested and he gave his name as Kelvin Emenike 31, who lives in Port Harcourt.

“He normally comes to Lagos for his ‘business transaction’ after which he travels back to Port Harcourt; but we have been able to track him back to Lagos for the same ‘business proposal’ and that ‘business proposal’ is what you are now seeing. This group also includes a woman who manages their ransom and she is also responsible for disbursing the funds to the gang members.

“In possession of these hoodlums were one AK 49 assault riffle with 78 7.6mm ammunition, five magazines, one Toyota pick-up van, one Toyota Matrix vehicle and one Boxer motor cycle. With these, they abduct their victims, blind fold them and take them to their hideout, an uncompleted building somewhere in Okota; and when they finish with their victims, they pack them in their respective hideouts. The man according to information available to us, was kidnapped but he tried to fight back and he was fatally shot and he died.

These suspects have also confessed to us that they were the one who perpetrated the crime. Manko added: “Again, let me get one thing cleared: the victim, Odid Nweze, according to our investigation may have been going to buy some drugs incidentally at the branch of a pharmacy where killers of Cynthia Osokogu bought their drugs when he was kidnapped.

The owner of the medicine store may not have knowledge of such dastardly act, it was just coincidental that some criminals were out to perpetrate their act.” Giving details on why they killed Odidi Nweze, kingpin of the gang, Klevin Emenike said, the death of their victim was purely in self defence. He said: “Actually we did not mean to kill him, all we were doing was to make money. Although the parents later paid N1.2m out of the money we demanded, but we killed him even before they paid the money.

What happened was that when he was kidnapped at Satellite, as we were going to Okota he attempted to disarm one of us so I grabbed the gun and fired him pointblank. He later bled to death because we could not take him to the hospital.” In another development, operatives of the Marine Police attached to Badagry division in Lagos, have arrested two suspected sea pirates who specialized in attacking oil vessels on the nation’s water and selling the product in Benin Republic.

Recovered from the suspects’ hideout in Padi-beach around Topo area of Badagry were their weapons which included two AK 47 riffles, four AK 47 magazines with fifty seven rounds of live ammunition; four pump action guns with one hundred and four rounds of live cartridges, two single barrel guns, charms and amulets. Also recovered were men’s underwear, two knives, a Ventolin inhaler, one Nokia handset and a visa phone which were all buried in the sand.

The suspects, Momanyon Fiapanu and Nunayon Yanagbon, both Ghanians, according to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Umar Manko, “specialised in hijacking diesel and other petroleum products in the waterways of Nigeria, Benin Republic and Ghana.” However, the suspects who claimed to be fishermen and have their abode at the beach, denied police claim, saying they recovered weapons belonging to one Setty, believed to be leader of the sea robbers.

However, during further interrogation, it was discovered that the said Setty who is on the run is a cousin to one of the suspects. 23-year-old Mumanyon who was paraded alongside other suspects, yesterday, said his cousin and other unidentified persons from the Niger Delta region were perpetrators of the attacks on oil tanks on the sea. He further stated that at the end of an operation, the group would bury the weapons inside the sand pending when they would be going for another operation.

Also paraded, was one Samuel Johnson who had been parading himself as a soldier with the Nigerian Army. Recovered from him were three police walkie -talkie radios, ten pairs of military uniform, four pairs of boots and six military belts.

Man Chops Off His own Hands

To avoid the temptation of stealing ever again, Ali decided to chop off his hands

In a situation he described asa ‘battle pitched’ against the devil, Afifi, 27, went to the main train station in the western Egyptian town of Tanta four years ago and waited for the train to approach where he was before dipping his hands under its wheels as hundredsof other train passengers watched in horror. Following the shock of what happened, Afifi’s father sent him to an assylum.

Following his release, Afifi sought the help of a local Islamic scholar to assist in chopping off the other wrist but the man refused citing the fact that he was not a ruler nor in a position to make that decision. Rather, the Islamic scholar advised him to repent and seek God’s help. Left with no other choice, Afifi decided to carry out the act by himself.

According to him(Afifi), “when I was finally released from the assylum a few months ago, I cut the other hand off to make sure I’ll never steal again.

32 students massacred in Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, Adamawa state

At least 32 students of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, Adamawa State, northeast Nigeria, have been killed.
The trouble began in the school at about 2 p.m. on Monday when the two rival students' groups who were about conducting an election of their union leaders began to accuse each other of revealing their secrets to security agents.

It was gathered that there was a strong disagreement between the two rival groups which compelled the school's authorities to invite armed policemen from the Mubi Police Divisional Headquarters to maintain peace in the school. According to sources, the two groups accused each other of revealing the source of their arms and ammunition to the Joint Military Task Force which raided Mubi town and discovered large arms cache in the area about two weeks ago.

A student of the Polytechnic, who did not want his name mentioned, told our correspondent that the problem began at about 9 p.m. yesterday at Anwan Samiya area, a student dominated settlement located close to the institution, when the two groups engaged each other in a bloody shoot-out from 9 p.m. till 4 a.m. today.

The sources added that when the sound of gun shots subsided this morning, at least 32 students were reportedly killed while several others were seriously injured and were receiving treatment at Mubi General Hospital

US embassy and pregnant women

The United States’ embassy in Nigeria seems to have perfected the art of denying well-meaning and legitimate non-immigrant Nigerian mothers visa for reasons best known to it. At the end of visa interview sessions, what one hears is, ‘’You are not qualified at this time’’! Women of child-bearing age are asked questions such as: Are you pregnant at this time? How many children do you have? Do you plan to have more children? And if the response to any of these questions is in the affirmative, then the next set of questions may be: Do you plan to have the baby in America? Can you afford to pay the medical bills? You are probably asked to show evidence and even after showing evidence you are told mostly that you do not qualify at this time or that you should reapply after having your baby.

Please note that there have been cases when female applicants did not even know they were pregnant during the interview and later discovered in the weeks to follow! Obviously, a married woman who is sexually active can become pregnant at anytime even with the use of contraceptives. Asking these kinds of questions during interviews is not a way to determine the purpose of the interview, which is to determine if the visa applicant is an intending immigrant.

Finding out if an applicant is pregnant or plan to become pregnant soon, has nothing to do with the application but is an unnecessary invasion of privacy. Moreover in Africa, questions like these are very sensitive as people like to keep such information private until the pregnancy becomes advanced. If one may ask, is the visa meant to be an agreement to celibacy in marriage? In my own case, I had used my American visa many times for holiday and even business before deciding to make use of the medical facilities available in the US to have my baby.

I also decided to do this because I developed some complications during the pregnancy and decided to seek better health care. Why then would a consular officer overlook all the business transactions done and deny an applicant for the simple reason of having a baby in America? Is it wrong for a mother to seek better medical treatment for herself anywhere in the world if she can afford it? Or, could it be that it is a crime under American laws?

Let us examine the major issues in this matter because I really do not understand the thinking. The B-1/B-2 visitors visa is for people travelling to the United States temporarily for business (B-1) or for pleasure or medical treatment (B-2). Generally, the B-2 visa is for travel that is recreational in nature, including tourism, visits to friends or relatives, medical treatment and activities of a fraternal, social or service nature often the B-1 and B-2 visas are combined and issued as one visa: the B-1/B-2 visa. So, can we safely assume that if you are issued a visa in the B-1/B-2 category, you can use the visa for any of the purposes stated above during the duration of the visa (which is usually 2 years validity) without fear that you will be denied another visa during renewal for using it for any of the above stated purposes?

Let us say, for instance, during the interview, you stated to the consular officer that you were travelling to America on holiday. If sometimes during the validity of your visa, you use same visa for business purposes or medical purposes, should you be penalised? Using one’s visa for medical treatment can be in form of the following: Any form of surgery both medical, cosmetic surgeries , having a baby or any gynaecological related procedure, general medical check-up e.t.c I have tried to find out several reasons why mothers are being denied visas to the US. Could it be because there is a law in place saying people cannot have their babies in America? In fact, I can say after much investigation that there is nothing like that.

Everyone is allowed to go everywhere in the world for medical treatment so long as they can afford it. Nigerians still go to South Africa, the United Kingdom, and other European countries to have their babies so long as they can afford it and they do so because they believe they will get better medical care. Could the issue be that the women that are having babies in America can cause overpopulation in the future? I still do not think that is the issue as the American government still runs the visa lottery every year in which thousands of people all over the world are granted immigrant status to live and work in America.

Denying mothers of American citizen children visa’s during renewal is indirectly denying the American citizen child entry to America because the child cannot travel unaccompanied at a minor age without either of his or her parent.

DNA Experts –“3 out of 10Nigerian men are not biological fathers of their children”

This is such an alarming conclusion; from this statistics, it got me thinking, could the picture above be true after all?

In a recent interview with The Nation, a DNA expert gave some interesting statistics about the paternity of Nigerian men, saying that three out of every ten Nigerian men are not the biological fathers of their kids!
What we have found out is that, anytime we take ten men, at least three of them eventually found that they are not the fathers of the children they call their own. And these men would have taken care of the children for all their lives.

Now, the global statistics is 100, 000 out of every 300, 000 men. But what we have found that is that the situation is higher in Nigeria than other places. For example in our laboratory here, 50 per cent of the cases comes out negative. And we also realised that majority of the first-borns are affected. You only need to be here to see big men cry like little kids and watch children weep in agony. It has been that bad.

He further noted that thirty per cent of fathers are unknowingly bringing up children who are not biologically theirs, and the percentage may be on the increase due to sexual recklessness. According to him, negative paternity results is both rampant in matrimony and casual affiliations.

I tell you, we have had series of married men come here and go back home devastated. In one instance, a man came here with his wife. Out of the five children he thought were his own, he discovered that only two belonged to him. And they are both duly married, living together as husband and wife.

As someone who tests about 15 to 20 families weekly, he mentioned some instances that could warrant a man to take the DNA test. People come here as a result of various types of controversies over the paternity of certain children. You know, families have come to us with claims that a child neither takes after the mother nor the father in looks and character.

So, the man of the house would be curious to ascertain facts. And when they come here with such children, the fears of the fathers have often been affirmed. Fathers usually have the doubts; maybe he has been hearing some rumours, and you know, men are often the last to hear such things about themselves. Until many of them come here to take the test, they have nurtured other men’s children before realising it.

Do you are agree with this statistics?

The beautiful activist, who has been fighting against all kinds of violence against woman recounted her strange ordeal in the hands  men in uniform

“On my way from the ambassador for peace beauty pageant held at the Sheraton Hotels, I decided to check on my brother at the end of my street. I parked my car in front of Dreams Garden at the end of my street behind one bus, and was going in to see Ugo (my brother) when a man dressed in a man-o-war uniform appeared from nowhere and shoved me on my breasts, commanding that I get into the bus I parked behind.

I reprimanded him for touching my breasts but instead of apologizing, he continued to pushing me by my breasts towards the bus, so when I couldn’t bear it anymore I pushed him too and started running away.

Three men wearing man-o-war uniform and a head warmer, no name tags, and two plain clothes policemen ran after me. When they caught me they descended on me, beating me mercilessly despite the fact that I was screaming who I was.

A girl who was waiting for me in my car, after waiting for a while and didn’t see me, came down to go and look for me at my brother’s place. She was horrified to see all those uniformed men assaulting me and trying to force me into the bus. She started pleading with them, telling them who I am and even showing them my car keys, but all to no avail.

She started screaming when she thought they were going to kill me and that attracted people’s attention. When crowd gathered and people started recognizing me, they started coming to my rescue and there was almost a mob attack. A soldier out of fear cocked his gun and said he’ll shoot me if I don’t enter the bus. What hurts most is that I’ve been fighting against violence against women, and now I’m a first victim of it. I have over 70 cases of abused women on Abuja streets. “The team that assaulted me tried to escape.

I chased them down to area 10. Ugo found me there and another soldier cocked a gun, pointed at his tummy and threatened to shoot. A female soldier cocked her gun and pointed at Justina, the girl in my car, who was supposed to be on my show (ability talk, earlier in the day on love 104.5fm).

Apparently the female soldier wanted to shoot Justina for having piercings on her face, because she said Justina was not a true Nigerian by that," She said She further stated that "women have been randomly abducted and forced to confess to prostitution by AEPB in conjunction with the questionable NGO, Society Against Prostitution and Child Labour. I have over 70 cases against them and now I’m a victim. Women are not safe in Abuja.

The Military should be put to better use. It’s high time they pay for the damages they have been causing. I am so traumatized. Having cocked guns pointed at us is a mental image that tortures me. Government needs to hear us out, get facts and figures and stop the abuse against women. I wish the national assembly will permit me make a full presentation on the degree of this violence against women in Abuja and act immediately on it.

I have rape victims, bullet injury victims, people beaten out of their jeeps at gunpoint whose names were published as prostitutes in national dailies, abused youth coppers… all sorts of traumatized victims. These people need rehabilitation at difference levels urgently.

Well, we hope the government is reading because the worst kinds of violence are those against women and children," she concluded.

Shell shuts Bomu–Bonny pipeline due to Fire

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) has shut the Bomu –Bonny Trunk line after discovering a fire on it reportedly caused by a burning vessel which is alleged to have vandalized the trunk line to steal crude oil.

Worshippers Mock Goodluck Jonathan at Church Service

Many christian worshippers at the National Christian Centre in Abuja today mocked and laughed at President Goodluck Jonathan when he described his government as second only to the United States of America in its commitment to fighting corruption.

The President was speaking during the church service, during which several of his ministers, advisers, women organisations, political apologists, chairmen of commissions, and former Heads of State Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo were in attendance.

“Our commitment to the fight against corruption is second to that of America’s commitment. We are very commitment to it and everybody knows.” As soon as he said this, members of the congregation looked at him incredulously and began to chuckle and laugh, as if they had just heard the punch line to a new joke.

But his appointees and friends tried to save the moment by clapping. It was unclear whether they were clapping for the joke, or in cheers, but a senior member of the government who spoke anonymously with newsmen after the service, said Jonathan was merely deceiving himself.

“Who does not know that this government is weak when it comes to fighting corruption? I think Jonathan is deceiving himself and not Nigerians,” he said smiling. Coming ahead of his address to the nation tomorrow on the occasion of Nigeria’s 52nd anniversary as an independent nation, President Jonathan’s statement about his commitment to combating corruption seems certain to lead to a new round of jokes among Nigerians.

Asked to comment on the statement today, a New York based analyst simply described himself as “FHLA.” Asked the meaning of that, he said, “I am Fighting Hypocrisy Like the Americans.” It would be recalled that last Monday at a conference of the Nigerian Institute of Management in Abuja, President Jonathan told Nigerians he is now ready to fight corruption with everything at his disposal. “My administration will fight corruption and associated social vices until they are exterminated from our body polity,” he said, opening the conference.

He then left for the United Nations General Assembly, where the American press promptly identified his delegation as one of the most financially reckless, his Pierre Hotel suite alone costing Nigeria $10,000 per night.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, occupied suites in two different hotels, one at the Four Seasons Hotel for $5,000 per night; and the other at Mr. Jonathan’s hotel for $3,000 per night. Reporting on Nigeria’s squandermania, America’s National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), said, “Nigeria’s delegation is keeping five vehicles parked outside the Pierre Hotel where the cheapest room is about $800 a night – or roughly what most Nigerians earn in two years.

" A SaharaReporters investigation found that the NNPC delegation actually rented a total of 10 limousines in New York for its seven visiting officials, at a daily cost of $1,800 per day. It was five of those vehicles that NBC found idling at Pierre.

“If Mr. Jonathan is going to ‘fight corruption and associated social vices until they are exterminated’,” a Nigerian newspaper columnist said today, “he is going to have a very large battlefield, and also a lot of opportunities for Nigerians to laugh at a bad joke.”

 SaharaReporters
