Mikel John Obi Chelsea midfielder shuts down his twitter account

The 25-year-old is a player who has long split Chelsea fans’ opinion, with many lauding him for his defensive graft while others bemoan his lack of creativity.
On this occasion the abuse went far beyond general football complaints.
A disappointed Mikel had apologised for his mistake after the match.
‘If I want to make up an excuse, I can,’ he said. ‘But, for me, I gave the ball away. I put my hands up, we move on.
‘I’m sorry about the mistake, but there are no excuses.’

Despite his apologies he still got racist messages on mistakes against Juventus and other abuse was sent to him on the social network.
‘Abuse on social networks is abhorrent. Racist tweets towards Mikel are totally unacceptable. Police informed. #CFC supports strongest action.’

The Nigerian had been bombarded with these vulgar messages after making a mistake which contributed to Chelsea’s downfall against Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Chelsea were leading 2-1 when Mikel’s sloppy pass returned the ball to the Italians, who went on to score through Fabio Quagliarella and salvage a point.

LASTMA and police trade blames over death of bus driver

The death on Monday, of a commercial driver, Monday Jacob, has put both the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the State Police Command at loggerheads as both parties continue to trade blames over his death.

According to reports by eyewitnesses, the deceased driver died at the hands of LASTMA officials and policemen who beat him mercilessly at the Town Planning Junction, Ilupeju, till he gave up the ghost.

Jacob had allegedly stopped his bus to carry passengers in a no-parking zone, which had led to the brutal assault by the law enforcement agents.

In the aftermath of his death, both the police and LASTMA have denied culpability and accused each other of being responsible for the beating and eventual death of the driver. Speaking on the issue, Babatunde Edu, General Manager, LASTMA, blamed the police for Jacob’s death and said it was “not true that LASTMA officials killed the driver.”

“In fact the police officers involved were on a different mission,” he said, noting that officers at the Ilupeju Police Station had begun investigations into the matter. “Those officer responsible for the killing of the driver were not operating with LASTMA at all, they were operating on their own.”

Meanwhile, Richard Omolaja, the agency’s spokesman, has identified four police officers: Wasiu, Matthew, Lukman, and Legba, as responsible and claimed that eight policemen had being detained over the issue, with the bus conductor expected to identify the assailants among the officers.

Ngozi Braide, Police Public Relations Officer, however, denied claims of police involvement in the Jacob’s death.

Hundreds of Passengers Stranded- Arik Air Suspends Domestic Flights

It has been reported that Arik Air, the Senate Committee on Aviation’s recommended national carrier, this morning suspended all its flights out of Lagos leaving passengers at the Murtala Muhammed Airport stranded.

Several accounts of the cause of the suspension has been reported in the media. The Will reports that all Arik Air flights have been grounded by labour unions over unpaid dues to them. It further stated that Aviation Union leaders and their members stormed the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport as early as 7.am this Thursday 20th September, 2012 to block the carrier from operating its normal flights out of Lagos.

In another report

In another report Premium Times, said the flight suspended all its domestic operations due to the “persistent hostility of the Ministry of Aviation and Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) management.”

The Airline’s claim of suspending its local operations differ from reports that the Airline was officially shut by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, over an N18 billion debt the airline owes the aviation authority.

Premium Times further noted that the action has affected the Abuja and Port-Harcourt Airports as well. Hundreds of passengers across the country are now stranded as a result of the suspension.

This news coming barely 24 hours after the Senate Committe on Aviation recommended the Airline as Nigeria’s national flag carrier has brought up heated debates.

Man rapes girl inside church toilet

A 30-year-old man, Taoreed Oseni, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate's Court in Lagos for allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-year old girl, Azeez Titilayo.

Oseni was alleged to have raped Titilayo in a church toilet at Oshodi, a Lagos suburb.

The accused, whose residential address is unknown, is facing a one-count charge of rape. Prosecuting Police Inspector Rachael Williams told the court that Oseni committed the offence on July 20.

She said the accused sexually assaulted the young girl in a toilet at the Methodist Church, Ogunlende Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi.

The accused, she said, forced his way into the toilet without the girl’s consent. The offence, Williams said, is punishable under Section 260 of the Criminal Law No. 11 Vol.44 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011. When the charges were read, Oseni pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate A.B. Olagbegi-Adelabu ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody till September 20.

19 year old girl wins a seat in Uganda's parliament

A teenage girl fresh out of high school has won a seat in Uganda's parliament, adding to the ruling party's majority but embarrassing some who say her success lowers expectations of lawmakers in the East African country.

Proscovia Oromait, 19, contested elections deep in eastern Uganda to fill the seat left vacant after her father's death.

President Yoweri Museveni's ruling party had been desperate for a win, having lost seven in eight parliamentary by-elections this year.

The polls are widely seen as a test of Museveni's popularity, and some calculated that she would win with a sympathy vote. The result was Uganda's youngest lawmaker ever - and a boost for Museveni's party.
