UK Visa: FG summons consulting firm

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Olugbenga Ashiru
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Olugbenga Ashiru, on Thursday summoned the management of VFS Global, a visa service company, over the poor treatment meted on applicants.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Indian-owned company processes visa applications to the UK and to some Shengen member nations.
This is contained in a statement signed by the ministry’s spokesman, Mr Ogbole Ode, in Abuja.
The statement expressed concern over the poor conditions, which applicants were subjected to during the visa submission and collection process.
“Reports indicate that those who have ₦10,000 receive VIP treatment, while the rest are left to wallow in the sun.

“It is unacceptable to have our citizens, queue in rain and be subjected to inconveniences,’’ it stated. It urged the company to provide suitable accommodation for applicants in view of its role as consultant to various embassies.

Responding, Ms Natasha Bhargava, the Senior Manager of VFS Global in Abuja, expressed the firm’s commitment to provide improved services to clients, noting, however, that the VIP facility was optional. Bhargava, who led a team of five officials to the ministry, said that suggestion boxes were available at the company’s Abuja and Lagos offices for applicants to register their complaints.

                                               Cynthia's parents with Gov. Uduaghan

The Lagos state Police Command refused to release the corpse of Cynthia Osokogu, the girl murdered by suspected kidnappers in a hotel in Lagos, to her parents for burial in her hometown today.

According to sources, the police had planned to do an autopsy on the body yesterday at the Ikeja General Hospital morgue. Police Commissioner Umaru Manko told reporters that the pathologist did not complete the autopsy and hence the decision not to release Cynthia’s body for burial.

It was not clear whether the autopsy delayed the release of the body. One source said the police needed to conclude the autopsy since the report is vital to the trial of the suspects, who had confessed killing the girl.

Cynthia’s burial which was scheduled for today in Agbor, Delta State, south-south Nigeria, had to be delayed when the remains of the deceased did not arrive Agbor, her home town, as expected.

A decision was later made by the family to give her a ceremonial burial.
