Gang feud leaves Nigerian teenager Kazeem Kolawole &two others sentenced to life in prison for paralyzing 5year-old girl in London

How do you console a family especially a mother who is left battling debt and  suffered insomnia and depression when she learnt that her daughter who was happily playing on the street has been shot and left  paralyzed? I bet you there are no words.
The shooting, on March 29, 2011 was captured on the store’s CCTV camera and showed the emotional moments. Roshan Selvakumar, 35, was shot in the face and still has bullet fragments lodged in his skull, Thusha Kamaleswaran  were innocent victims of the gang feud. It all went down last year, a for a gang shooting in South London, Thusha was playing in her aunt’s food and wine store in Stockwell, when she was accidentally shot in the chest during the shootout and hitting another innocent bystander, Roshan Selvakumar in the attack which left him with a bullet fragments in his skull and Thusha paralysed.

Kolawole was an accomplice to ring leader Nathaniel Grant, 21 who actually carried out the shooting and ‘sidekick’ Anthony McCalla, 20. The trio from the Organised Criminals gang, cycled to the store intending to kill rival gangster Roshaun Bryan of rival gang ‘All Bout Money’.
The three were found guilty in an Old Bailey Court last month of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to the girl and Selvakumar, plus the attempted murder of Bryan. Judge Martin Stephens QC said none of them had shown a “shred of remorse” since the trial began.

I’m impressed even the Police officers were so moved by the family’s plight that they have already raised £125,000 to go towards her care.

Mamman Keita in prison for over 10 years without trial

Unbelievable but true.

An Ikeja High court on Wednesday ruled that it was wrong for the Lagos state government to have detained a Nigerien, Mamman Keita in prison for over 10 years without trial and that the government must pay a compensation of N7 million to the detainee.

The presiding judge, of the case between the detainee and the state government, Justice Habeeb Abiru gave this ruling in response to an application the Lagos state Attorney General, Ade Ipaye had filed asking the court for a stay of execution its earlier judgement on the case.

Justice Abiru had in an earlier judgment delivered on December 16, 2011, ordered the Lagos state Attorney General to pay the sum of N7 million to Mr Keita to compensate him for his continuous detention in prison for over 10 years without trial.
The court had held that Mr Keita’s detention without proper arraignment and trial in court was a violation of his fundamental human rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He had also ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar and Mr Ipaye to tender an apology to the 43-years old ram seller for detaining him unjustly for murder.
The judge while dismissing the application held that it lacked merit because Mr Keita was unjustly detained for over 10 years and deserved the compensation. The court also faulted Mr Ipaye’s claim that Mr Keita was remanded in prison by the Police without forwarding the case to the office of the Attorney General.
The judge added that both the Police and the Attorney General was responsible for ensuring that people were given justice, which was denied Keita in this case. “The criminal justice administration law was proposed by the ministry of justice and we have a duty to uphold its provisions”, Justice Abiru said. Mr Ipaye had filed an appeal at the Appeal Court, Lagos against the judgment and had asked the High Court to stay execution of its judgment pending the determination of the appeal.

In the application filed on his behalf by Olabisi Ogungbesan, Director, Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions, the Lagos state Attorney General had faulted Justice Abiru’s judgment which necessitated the appeal. The Mr Ipaye had argued that the issues raised in the grounds of appeal are obscure and clearly touches on the powers of the Attorney General and the police under the relevant laws of the land.

He had claimed that the judgment debt, if granted would be paid from the taxes paid by Lagosians which would impose an increased burden on the state government. Mr Keita’s lawyer, Ahmed Adetola-Kazeem had urged the court to dismiss the application, arguing that it lacks merit and would deprive his client the fruits of litigation. The matter was adjourned to May 2 for hearing of the garnishee application filed by Mr Adetola-Kazeem.

Nigerian President is listed among 100 most influential people in the world,2012

Are  you surprised?

TIME Magazine, a US Weekly News magazine today released its annual list of the ‘100 Most Influential People in the World’ for the year 2012.

Making this list is Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan.
According to TIME,“they are the people who inspire us, entertain us, challenge us and change our world.”

The citation on Jonathan was written by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia: Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan exemplifies the African political renaissance at a time when the people of the continent are starting to reap the fruit of their resources and their hard work. President Jonathan, 54, possesses the qualities needed at this moment of great challenges, having come to power at a crucial moment in the history of Nigeria.

The country has grown out of its past of corruption, mismanagement and brutality, but the foundation of good governance is still fragile. In two short years, President Jonathan has shown the same dexterity he demonstrated as governor of Bayelsa, the same ability to find the remedies to the many complexities of running a nascent democracy. He has spearheaded the fight against corruption and turned Nigeria into an example of good governance. He has also made a significant impact on consolidating peace and security in West Africa. From the onset of our own crisis, Liberia has benefitted from the support of Nigeria.

President Jonathan not only upheld the trend but added to it. With leaders like President Jonathan, Africa is sure to move toward prosperity, freedom and dignity for all of its people. The list also contains names like United States of America President Barack Obama; U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, American Republican presidential candidates, Mitt Romney and American billionaire Warren Buffett. Area boys get training school in Lagos

Do you remember when I posted this?http://xpressurselfshow.blogspot.com/2012/03/task-force-in-lagos-arrests-86-persons.html.
It seems our governor reads our blog O! especially on the question raised on craftsmanship.

Most drop out in united state (abroad) they‘ve got a vocation because the economy of the united state (abroad) embraced them.
So much can be done in this country that will eradicate poverty: to start with Government should pump money into the economy; Check mate so many fraud in major sector of the economy (oil& power sectors),billions of dollars oil marketer are owing should be returned.
This sounds really nice to the ears, will the government be able to complete what they started with these area boys?

A vocational center, Lagos State School Leavers Modern Apprenticeship, has been inaugurated by the Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola for street urchins, popularly known as Area boys in a bid to get them off the streets.

The center which was inaugurated on Tuesday is expected to not only provide a base for young school leavers to acquire vocational skills but also provide a base for the urchins to be trained without fee. At the inauguration of the center, Mr Fashola noted that most of the urchins dropped out of school and did not have good parental care.

According to him, the situation the urchins found themselves forced them into taking drugs and other vices, adding that “these youth if trained could be very useful members of the society. That is why we feel it is imperative to train these miscreants.” He explained that this scheme and amongst many others are responsible for the fall in crime in the state. “This is what we have been doing to secure the state from crime. Before 2001, you could not walk on the streets of Lagos without being molested by these miscreants.

We have about 17 other skill acquisition centers to arrest the situation and prevent crimes.” he said Well done governor Babtunde Fashola, hope all the governors in Nigeria will emulate this.

Xpressurselfshow is really proud of our Lagos state governor.

Can you buy love? Saudi woman will pay SR5 million to find Mr. Right

Does money really answer all things? Including true love?

The Saudi woman put the attractive advertisement in the local magazine, Roa, calling on all marriage-ready applicants to write in via email or fax. The announcement neither mentioned the woman’s name, age or whereabouts and the millions do come with strings attached.
She will only reveal the conditions in person, however, the ad explains.
“Applicants should provide their contact number so the woman will contact them in case she agrees on the marriage,” the magazine said.

These days the things we hear......

It quoted the woman as saying: “It does not matter whether the new husband is attracted to my money as the most important thing is that he must appreciate marriage life and marital duties…I am even ready to accept a Misyar marriage [a contractual marriage in which the couple may continue to live separately and meet to satisfy marital duties when they please] and pay him SRfive million at once…he will live with me in my villa and must accept all my conditions which I will reveal to him later.”

According to the magazine the woman is divorced, said to have parted ways with her first husband because he was “greedy and wanted only money”. “I made the wrong choice first time….I want to make the right choice now…my main obsession now is to marry…I am desperate to marry,” the woman said.

Oh! well you know what they say about desperation, this is a classic case.

Today - James Ibori Sentenced to 13 Years in Prison in UK Court

The former governor of Delta state has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for corruption and money laundering charges at the Southwark Crown Court 9 in London. His sentence was announced at about 3.20pm today by Judge Anthony Pitts.

Earlier on, his lawyers had tried to make a case for a lenient sentencing.  His lawyer, Nicholas Pernell blamed Badrash Gohil and former Akwa Ibom state governor, Victor Attah, for the V-Mobile scam saying they were the architects of the fraud. He further credited his client with every development in Nigeria, and especially in Delta state, from the banking reforms, to peace in the Niger Delta, education, and building of low-cost housing. Also in his defence, he stated that his client, James Ibori, played a part in supporting British industry even before he became governor. As evidence, he cited a letter from British Airways, thanking Ibori for restoring direct flights between Nigeria and Britain.
Do you think that if he had not pleaded guilty the years would have been more than 13years?

Mr. Pernell, in his conclusion, asked the Judge to consider the pressure that his client has been under since investigatons began in 2005, and also the accused’s children who now have both their parents in custody before passing his sentence.

Also in his defence, veteran sportsman, John Fashanu, made an appearance in the court today. He testified saying the former governor achieved a lot in sports, and was instrumental to the end of militancy in the state. He told the court that Ibori built nine mini-sports stadia and three Olympic-sized stadia in Delta state and also built the first shooting range in Nigeria.

The court went for a recess at about 12.30pm and reconvened at 2.25pm after which his sentence was read. James Ibori had earlier pleaded guilty to a number of corruption and money laundering charges against him put at about $250million before Judge Pitts. This includes the V-Mobile and Bombardaire scams which amounted to $50million. Ibori and Victor Attah, former Akwa Ibom state governor also formed a phantom company called ADF to siphon US$37.5million from Delta and Akwa Ibom states’ shares in V-Mobile.

He was accused of embezzling these funds during his tenure as governor and using most of them to live a lavish lifestyle and acquire property and assets around the world. Judge Pitts said that the sentencing will not be the end of the matter as his property will also be confiscated.
