Nigeria begins importation of Petroleum Products from Niger Republic‏

Nigerian Fuel marketers based in Katsina state have begun importing kerosene and diesel from the new refinery in the neighboring country of Niger Republic.
Nigeria before this development only imported refined petroleum products from countries like Brazil and India. The refinery which was opened in November 2011 is just a few kilometers north of the Nigerian border and has the capacity to produce up to 20, 000 barrels per day.
Reportedly, the diesel imported from Niger is sold at a cheaper rate compared to the cost of diesel brought to the North from the seaports in Lagos.
The imported products are sold to end users and other retailers in Katsina state.
The Niger refinery which is located east of the capital city of Niamey is jointly owned by Chinese state oil company CNPC and Niger following a $5 billion deal signed between the two in 2008 to simultaneously build the plant and develop crude oil from Agadem Oilfields.
